Washington, Connecticut—especially Washington Depot—is the town most closely associated with inspiring Stars Hollow. Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, Daniel, visited the area while she was developing the Gilmore Girls pilot, and the landscape and small-town details helped shape the fictional setting. Washington is an inspiration, not a real-life replica: Stars Hollow is fictional, and Connecticut Public reports that no episode was filmed in Connecticut.
What town inspired Stars Hollow?
The strongest real-world connection is Washington, Connecticut, including the village of Washington Depot. During an October visit to the area, Sherman-Palladino and Daniel stayed at the Mayflower Inn while she was working on the pilot. She later recalled the changing leaves, pumpkin-patch signs and hay rides as strikingly different from California: “It was leafing season; it was bucolic and beautiful in October, the leaves were changing and there were signs up for pumpkin patches and hay rides. And it was like, what the ****? I come from California. There’s no pumpkin patches and hay rides here. It felt like the whole thing was straight out of central casting.” Connecticut Public published the account on December 1, 2025.

The connection is about atmosphere and inspiration, not a one-to-one map. Washington is a real Connecticut town; Stars Hollow is a made-up place assembled for the series.
Can you visit the real Stars Hollow?
You can visit Washington and see places connected to the show’s origin story, but you will not find an official Stars Hollow set or a town that exactly reproduces the fictional one. Connecticut Public reports that no episodes were filmed in Connecticut. In Washington, the town hall area is surrounded by local businesses, and the town’s everyday settings offer a sense of the New England landscape that helped inspire Sherman-Palladino.

Washington stops for fans
- Mayflower Inn & Spa: The inn where Sherman-Palladino and Daniel stayed during their visit. Connecticut Public reported in December 2025 that access was limited to paying guests and people with dinner reservations. Check directly with the property about current access, dining and reservations before making plans.
- Hickory Stick Bookshop: A local independent bookshop near the Washington town hall area.
- Washington Food Market: A local market that an owner compared to Doose’s Market, the fictional grocery shop in the series.
- The Po Café: A breakfast spot that recalls the casual coffee-sharing scene Sherman-Palladino observed during her trip.
- Frederick Gunn School, Washington Art Association and Steep Rock Association: These are among the area stops named by the June 2025 Litchfield regional guide. The guide identifies the Frederick Gunn School as the model for fictional Chilton.
How Washington and New Milford compare for fans
New Milford is a separate town, not another name for Washington. It makes a useful second stop for visitors seeking a town-square look and fan events, while Washington has the clearer link to the show’s creation.

Other Connecticut stops on a Gilmore Girls trip
For a broader itinerary, Connecticut Public’s December 2025 guide also points to places beyond the Washington–New Milford pairing. These are related fan stops, not the single town that inspired Stars Hollow.

Connecticut Public reported that Gilmore Girls-specific tourism content from the Connecticut Office of Tourism received 143% higher daily readership from September 15 to November 15 in the prior year than that same content’s average daily readership across the full year. That is a comparison of readership, not a count of visitors, arrivals or tourism spending. The figure was reported by Connecticut Public on December 1, 2025.
