What is Escape at Dannemora about?
The 2018 limited series dramatizes the escape of Richard Matt and David Sweat from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, upstate New York. Brett Johnson and Michael Tolkin created the series, and Ben Stiller directed it. Patricia Arquette, Benicio del Toro and Paul Dano are among its central cast. Netflix classifies it TV-MA and describes it as a dark, suspenseful true-crime story based on real life.

Is the miniseries based on a true story?
Yes. The escape and the three-week manhunt are documented events. The New York State Office of the Inspector General’s June 2016 investigation is the primary official account of how the men got out and what the state found about security failures. Netflix Tudum also summarizes the event and the series’ real-life basis.

That does not make every scene a verified record. The show dramatizes people and events; dialogue, private encounters, relationships and motives should be understood as the series’ portrayal unless independently documented. How did the Dannemora prison escape happen?
The route out
According to the state investigation, shortly after 11 p.m. on June 5, 2015, Matt and Sweat escaped from cells in Clinton’s Honor Block through holes cut into the back walls. They used pipes as handholds and footholds to descend behind their cells, then traversed tunnels and exited through a manhole in Dannemora. The report says they had prepared the route over the preceding three months.
The manhunt and its outcome
Prison staff discovered the men missing the next morning. The resulting search lasted three weeks. Netflix Tudum reports that a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer fatally shot Matt on June 26, 2015, after Matt, armed, drew attention by shooting at a passing vehicle. A state trooper shot and wounded Sweat, who was apprehended on June 28.
Prison tailor-shop supervisor Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell and guard Gene Palmer served prison time for their roles, according to Netflix Tudum’s account. The series explores their involvement, but its character scenes should not be treated as a transcript of established fact.

What did the escape cost New York State?
The Inspector General’s 2016 report estimated approximately $23 million in New York State law-enforcement overtime and separately reported $573,000 for prison repairs and additional security measures. The overtime estimate excluded costs borne by federal and local agencies, other states and other countries, so neither figure is a total cost across all jurisdictions.
The report said that more than 1,300 local, state, federal and Canadian law-enforcement officers were involved at various times. Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott wrote: “The escape and three-week manhunt disrupted and brought fear to communities and residents throughout the region.”
What kind of true-crime series is it?
Escape at Dannemora is a character-focused prison-break drama, rather than a documentary investigation. Netflix calls it dark and suspenseful and rates it TV-MA. Viewers looking for the official account of the escape’s planning, route and institutional failures can read the Inspector General’s report; the series offers a dramatized telling of the people and events surrounding it.
