Treat previous years’ logistics as historical examples—not directions for this year—and check Macy’s and New York City’s official updates before travelling.
What is confirmed about the 2026 parade?
Macy’s describes its approaching 2026 event as the 100th parade. The tradition began in 1924: at a November 2025 city press conference, Macy’s Executive Producer Will Coss said it had marked the start of the holiday season since that year. New York City called the 2025 event the 99th annual parade. Macy’s centennial page promotes 100 inflatables, a history book covering parade milestones, and centennial merchandise.
Giant character balloons joined the parade in 1927, according to a 1998 New York City Mayor’s Office release. The city’s account also describes a historical safety response after a balloon struck a lamppost and seriously injured a spectator.
When does the parade start, and what is the route?
The 2026 start time and route are not confirmed in the official event materials cited here. Macy’s and New York City publish event-specific logistics, so check their latest notices as Thanksgiving approaches rather than relying on last year’s schedule.

What happened in 2025
The 2025 city notice described a 2.5-mile Manhattan route from West 77th Street and Central Park West to Seventh Avenue and West 34th Street. City officials gave different descriptions of the timing: the notice referred to a 9 a.m. kickoff, while a Mayor’s Office transcript said the first groups would march at 8:30 a.m. and the last marchers would finish around noon. Those descriptions should not be collapsed into a single exact start time for 2025, much less treated as the 2026 schedule. See the Mayor’s Office November 26, 2025 transcript and NYC Emergency Management’s November 24, 2025 release.
Where can you watch in person?
Wait for the official 2026 spectator map before choosing a viewing spot. The route is in Manhattan, but public access can be limited or unavailable in some areas, and viewing rules can change from year to year.

For context only, Macy’s 2022 spectator guide listed public viewing on Central Park West between West 75th and West 61st Streets and on Sixth Avenue between West 59th and West 38th Streets. It also identified areas with limited or no viewing, including the kickoff area, Columbus Circle, sections near Herald Square, and the television area. These are examples from 2022, not a current map or promise of access. Macy’s route and viewing information
When the current map is released, compare locations by their public-access status, position along the route, arrival and transit options, and expected crowds. Do not assume that a viewing location from an older guide will remain open.

What should you bring, and what is prohibited?
Use the 2026 prohibited-items list once it is published. Older lists demonstrate why checking matters: Macy’s 2022 guide prohibited umbrellas, backpacks, large bags, chairs, alcohol, drones, and e-cigarettes. The 2025 city transcript listed umbrellas, chairs, oversized bags, strollers, bicycles, pets, alcohol, drones, and weapons. Neither list establishes the 2026 rules.
Macy’s 2022 advice was to dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, and bring a poncho because weather can be unpredictable. Check current guidance before packing, since weather policies and allowed items are event-specific. The 2022 guide also said limited grandstand tickets were not sold to the general public; confirm any 2026 seating or ticket information directly with Macy’s rather than assuming that policy still applies.

How should you plan transportation and stay informed?
Expect event-day road closures and possible transit changes around the route. For the 2025 parade, New York City advised visitors to use public transportation and consult the MTA for service updates. It described five pedestrian crossings on Sixth Avenue and projected that affected roads would reopen around 3 p.m.; these were 2025 operational details, not a forecast for 2026.
- Check the current official route and street notices. Use Macy’s event page and New York City advisories for the edition you plan to attend.
- Check transit close to your trip. Review MTA updates and allow extra time for service changes, crowding, and walking to an open viewing area.
- Follow active city alerts. NYC Emergency Management offered Notify NYC alerts for the 2025 parade and balloon inflation, covering weather, road closures, and traffic delays. The 2025 opt-in details may not remain active; use the city’s current Notify NYC information instead of relying on an old keyword or short code.
- Follow public-safety directions on the day. In 2025, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch advised visitors to stay alert and report concerns to an officer or call 911. City officials also said balloon height decisions depended on wind conditions. Follow current instructions from event staff and public-safety agencies.
Can you watch on television or online?
The broadcast schedule and viewing arrangements for the 2026 parade are not established by the current materials cited here. Check Macy’s announcements and broadcasters’ listings closer to the event; do not assume a particular channel or streaming platform based on an older edition.

How big is the parade?
Published crowd and participant figures vary by speaker and year, so they should be read as attributed estimates rather than timeless totals. Macy’s current press page says the parade draws more than 3.5 million spectators in New York City and 35 million viewers at home, without specifying a year. At the November 2025 city press conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch cited 3.5 million people along the route and about 50 million more watching on television around the world. These estimates differ and are not reconciled in the cited sources. Macy’s press page
Figures for the 2025 event also differed in that press conference. Tisch cited 8,000 marchers and 42 balloons; Coss cited more than 5,000 volunteers and 34 balloons. Both cited 28 floats and 11 marching bands, while Coss also mentioned more than 700 clowns. These are statements about the 2025 parade, not guaranteed annual counts.
