The change did not mean every ThinkGeek-branded activity ended that day: GameStop said its 40 U.S. physical stores would remain open at the time. The distinction matters, but it does not erase what was lost when a dedicated destination became a section inside a broader retailer.
What happened to ThinkGeek.com?
On June 14, 2019, ThinkGeek’s FAQ announced that its standalone website would move into its parent company’s online store on July 2. TechCrunch reproduced the FAQ’s wording: “On July 2nd, 2019, ThinkGeek.com will be moving in with our parent company GameStop. After this move, you will be able to shop a curated selection of unique items historically found on ThinkGeek.com via a ThinkGeek section at GameStop.” TechCrunch reported the announcement and transition details.
That was a move of a curated selection, not a promise that the full ThinkGeek.com store or its standalone shopping experience would continue unchanged. GameSpot’s June 28 report likewise said the collection would be available through a ThinkGeek section at GameStop beginning July 2. It also said the company’s 40 U.S. physical stores would remain open at that point. That was the status announced in June 2019; it does not establish whether those stores remained open afterward. GameSpot’s report on the closure describes the distinction.
Why the change feels like a loss
ThinkGeek’s appeal was not just that it sold licensed merchandise. It was a destination organized around the tastes of the global geek community: video-game and pop-culture products, including apparel and collectibles. GameStop’s fiscal 2018 filing described ThinkGeek as a retailer for that community and highlighted exclusive and unique products. GameStop’s fiscal 2018 filing provides that description; contemporary coverage also identified apparel and collectibles.

A dedicated store can make an assortment feel like a place: browsing is part of the experience, and the products sit together under a clear identity. Moving a selection into a section of a larger retailer changes that frame, even when some of the merchandise makes the move. Calling that a loss is an editorial judgment, not a measured account of how every customer felt. The available reporting does not quantify the cultural impact or establish a representative fan response.
Why GameStop folded the store into its platform
GameStop presented the move as a way to streamline ThinkGeek’s ecommerce operation by incorporating it into GameStop’s omnichannel platform. In a June 14, 2019 report, Game Developer quoted GameStop CEO George Sherman: “We have very successful collectibles business and need to harness the power of the team and the investment made in that team going forward.” Game Developer reported the company’s stated rationale.

GameStop’s financial filing offers additional context, but not a complete explanation of the decision. Its fiscal 2019 Form 10-K says lower-than-expected profitability of the ThinkGeek website and the decision to exit wholesale led to a fiscal 2018 impairment of $5.9 million related to ThinkGeek customer-relationship intangible assets. That accounting charge was recorded in fiscal 2018; it was not a sales figure, a valuation of ThinkGeek as a whole, or a measure of fan sentiment. Nor does the filing prove it was the sole reason for the 2019 transition. GameStop’s fiscal 2019 Form 10-K describes the impairment.
GameStop later acknowledged a separate problem with its ecommerce platform. In an August 29, 2019 announcement about its redesigned website, the company said customer feedback indicated GameStop.com had become increasingly difficult to use. That statement adds context about the platform’s challenges, but GameStop did not present it as a direct explanation for the ThinkGeek move. The company’s site announcement discusses the redesign.
What the 2019 transition meant for customers
The announcement included specific arrangements for the move. These were transition terms reported in 2019, not current customer-service promises:
- Gift cards: ThinkGeek gift cards would be honored online and in GameStop stores.
- Returns: Return requests would be accepted for orders placed before June 13, 2019.
- Shopping: The announced destination was a curated ThinkGeek section at GameStop, rather than the full standalone store.
These details were included in TechCrunch’s report of the ThinkGeek FAQ. Read the contemporaneous account for the original transition information.

If the question is whether ThinkGeek.com’s standalone store shut down, yes: it was scheduled to move to GameStop on July 2, 2019. If the question is whether all ThinkGeek-branded activity ended that day, the announcement did not say that. GameStop announced a curated online section, and contemporary reporting said its physical stores would remain open at the time. Those reports do not establish the present-day status of the stores, the section, or legacy inventory.
So the headline’s “shutting down” describes the end of the standalone website, not a verified claim that every ThinkGeek operation disappeared on July 2. What ended was a distinct online destination; what GameStop announced in its place was a selection within its own retail platform.
