AJ Lee left WWE in 2015, then built a career across memoir writing, comics, film and television, and wrestling production and commentary. She returned to WWE in September 2025, so her post-WWE story was not a permanent goodbye. Her latest reported comments, from September 2026, describe future wrestling work as dependent on finding a story that excites her—not as a confirmed match schedule.
Why AJ Lee left WWE in 2015
Lee’s last WWE match before her return took place on March 30, 2015, and WWE announced her retirement on April 3, according to Wrestling Inc.’s retrospective. The retrospective says her memoir later discussed a cervical-spine injury alongside other circumstances surrounding her exit. That is retrospective reporting, not a new medical assessment or proof that one factor alone explains her decision. Wrestling Inc.’s career retrospective
She published a memoir and spoke about mental health
In 2017, Lee published Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules, a memoir about her life and mental-health experiences. Wrestling Inc. reported that it debuted at number 10 on The New York Times hardcover nonfiction bestseller list; that placement is reported by the retrospective rather than independently verified here. The outlet also described Lee’s support for NAMI. Wrestling Inc.’s retrospective
She became a comics writer
Lee formed a writing partnership with actor and writer Aimee Garcia. Their comic GLOW vs. The Babyface was published by IDW in November 2019. Their other work included the Dungeons & Dragons comic At the Spine of the World; Lee also contributed to DC’s Wonder Woman: Black and Gold. These credits marked a substantial extension of her work beyond wrestling. Wrestling Inc.’s comics and career retrospective

She discussed more screen projects in 2025
In a December 2025 interview with Stephanie McMahon on What’s Your Story?, Lee discussed her work on Blade of the 47 Ronin, Sacramento and Heels, as well as a production company she called Scrapyard Productions. She said she and Garcia were writing a movie for Toei Animation: “We are writing a movie for Toei Animation; I think that’s all I can say.” The interview report did not give a title or release date for that project. Lee also described a solo feature project as a mental-health horror story; it was discussed as a project in development, not as a released film. Wrestling Inc.’s report on the interview
She returned to WWE in September 2025
WWE announced on September 8, 2025, that Lee had returned on SmackDown alongside CM Punk and was scheduled to appear on Raw for the first time in more than ten years. WWE described her as a three-time Divas Champion. The announcement establishes her return, not a full-time schedule. WWE’s September 2025 announcement

What she has said about what comes next
In a September 2026 report about her appearance on Mind Over Mountain with Cheryl Strayed, Lee described herself as drawn to stories and said, “If there is a story there, that’s going to be the thing that excites me.” She also said, “I’m going to keep writing, working out, and staying ready.” Those comments point to an open-ended approach; the report does not establish a confirmed next match or an ongoing WWE schedule.
