WrestleMania 34 exposed the limits of the first formula; a 2020 family feud gave Reigns a new character; and his WrestleMania matches with Cody Rhodes framed both the survival and the end of his championship reign.
The 2015 Royal Rumble put Reigns’ rise under pressure
Reigns won the 2015 Royal Rumble, but WWE’s retrospective says the Philadelphia crowd wanted Daniel Bryan to go the distance and describes Reigns’ reception as “less than enviable.” WWE later characterized the following year as an unplanned redemption tour. That account makes the Rumble an important early legacy match: it captured the gap between the company’s chosen next star and the audience response WWE itself acknowledged.
WWE’s retrospective also says Reigns suffered a WrestleMania loss the following year. That makes the match a credible candidate for the “destroyed” side of this title—not because one loss erased Reigns’ career, but because the outcome undercut the expected payoff of his long build as the top challenger. Jey Uso’s 2020 feud built the Tribal Chief character
The decisive character shift came in Reigns’ 2020 feud with Jey Uso. At Hell in a Cell, Reigns won the first match contested under I Quit rules. He forced Jey to quit by threatening Jimmy Uso, turning the victory into a display of control over family rather than a straightforward contest of strength. This was the foundation of the Head of the Table persona: Reigns demanded acknowledgment and used family loyalty as leverage. The match gave the character a dramatic premise that the earlier push had lacked. His authority was no longer simply a claim that he deserved the top spot; it was power exercised inside the Bloodline.
WrestleMania 38 marked the championship peak
At WrestleMania 38, Reigns defeated Lesnar in a Winner Take All match and unified WWE’s top two championships. WWE reported that his Universal title reign had reached 581 days at the event. The result completed a reversal of the WrestleMania 34 story. Lesnar had once been the champion Reigns could not dislodge; now Reigns beat him with both titles at stake, at the height of the Tribal Chief era. The match’s legacy rests as much on consequence as on its place in the rivalry: Reigns emerged as the unified champion, not merely a challenger seeking validation.
WrestleMania 39 preserved the reign; WrestleMania XL ended it
Rhodes’ first attempt kept the story unresolved
At WrestleMania 39, Reigns retained the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes. Solo Sikoa’s interference was decisive, with earlier Bloodline involvement also part of the story. The retention kept the central question open and established the stakes for a rematch. Rhodes’ rematch brought the title run to a close
WrestleMania XL supplied the ending. On Saturday, Reigns and The Rock defeated Rhodes and Seth Rollins. On Sunday, Rhodes defeated Reigns in a Bloodline Rules match to win the championship and end Reigns’ title reign. Together, the two Rhodes matches make a clear final chapter: the first protected Reigns’ reign through interference, while the second made its defeat the payoff to the Bloodline conflict. Whether the payoff justified the wait is a matter of judgment, but the structure made Reigns’ championship loss inseparable from the family power struggle that had defined his character.
