“Sycamore,” from Ed Sheeran’s 2023 album − (Subtract), is the song most directly tied to his wife Cherry Seaborn’s tumor diagnosis and the couple’s wait for news. “No Strings” has also been linked to that difficult period, but as a broader love song rather than a detailed account of the diagnosis. “Eyes Closed,” despite appearing on the same album, is about grief for Sheeran’s friend Jamal Edwards.
“Sycamore” is the clearest song about the diagnosis
In a CBS News interview, Sheeran said Seaborn’s checkup revealed a tumor when she was six months pregnant. He said he then wrote songs about what they were experiencing and described “Sycamore” through the image of being in a waiting room. Apple Music’s album editorial likewise places Sheeran and his pregnant wife in a doctor’s waiting room during the diagnosis.
That makes “Sycamore” the strongest answer if you are looking for the song most specifically connected to the diagnosis and the uncertainty surrounding it. The connection comes from Sheeran’s own explanation and the track’s contextual framing, not simply from the fact that it appears on an album shaped by a painful period.
“No Strings” is connected, but in a broader way
Apple Music frames “No Strings” as a love song for Seaborn. Contemporaneous coverage also reported that Sheeran connected the song’s inspiration to the illness ordeal and his father’s advice about marriage. That supports including it among songs associated with the period, while distinguishing it from “Sycamore”: the sources do not describe “No Strings” as a scene-by-scene account of the diagnosis.

“Eyes Closed” is about a different loss
“Eyes Closed” is often grouped with the other emotionally heavy songs on − (Subtract), but its specific subject is different. Apple Music describes it as a song following the death of Sheeran’s friend Jamal Edwards. In the CBS News interview, Sheeran said Edwards died about a week after the tumor diagnosis and identified “Eyes Closed” with that grief. The events belong to the same difficult chapter of his life; that does not make the song about Seaborn’s illness.
What Sheeran has said about Seaborn’s illness
Sheeran’s account in the CBS News interview uses the word “tumor”: “My wife had gone in for a checkup and they found a tumor in her, and she was six months pregnant.” He also said, “I then wrote a bunch of songs about that.” He described his state of mind during the period as “spiraling through fear, depression and anxiety.”

In that interview, Sheeran said there was no route to treatment until after the birth. A later Recording Academy retrospective calls the tumor cancerous and reports that surgery after the birth was successful. The more specific description should be attributed to that later account; Sheeran’s cited interview says “tumor.” The public accounts do not establish a cancer subtype, stage, or other medical details, and this personal account should not be taken as medical guidance.

Sheeran has described − (Subtract) as a response to a period that included Seaborn’s diagnosis, Edwards’s death, and legal stress. For the songs asked about here, the distinction is between a direct connection to the diagnosis (“Sycamore”), a broader relationship and illness-period connection (“No Strings”), and a separate bereavement (“Eyes Closed”).
