The video often captioned “Chinese Garba” has not been verified as Garba. Scroll’s October 2018 report found at least three versions of the clip with different soundtracks and noted that the outdoor footage had no ambient sound. That led the report to suggest the music may have been replaced, but it did not establish how the clip was edited—or identify the dance, performers, location, or original uploader.
What the 2018 report found
Scroll’s October 3, 2018 article compared versions of the circulating clip and reported that at least three had different soundtracks. The article also noted that the outdoor footage contained no ambient sound. It treated that absence as a reason to suspect the original audio had been removed and music added, not as verified proof of an editing history. Read Scroll’s report.
Scroll observed that the dancers were not holding dandiya sticks. That detail does not establish what dance they were performing: the article did not offer a confirmed identification, and the absence of sticks alone is not enough to identify a dance.
What the “Chinese Garba” caption does—and does not—establish
The label describes how the clip circulated; it is not confirmation that the performers were Chinese or that they were dancing Garba. Scroll questioned whether the footage showed Garba but did not name the dance, establish where it was filmed, or trace the clip to its first uploader.

Scroll reproduced a September 30, 2018 post by Anand Mahindra, who wrote that the music “may have been grafted on to some random Chinese dance.” The wording is explicitly speculative. It should not be treated as an identification of the dancers or their tradition.
What remains unresolved
- The dance shown in the footage has not been identified by the cited report.
- The original soundtrack, filming location, performers’ identities, and first uploader are not established there.
- The differing soundtracks and lack of ambient sound support a question about possible audio replacement, but do not prove who changed the audio, when it happened, or why.
So the careful conclusion is limited: versions of a clip circulated with different music, and the available reporting does not verify the caption “Chinese Garba.” It also does not prove what the dancers were actually performing.
