It was not unanimous mourning: reports also documented criticism linked to Hogan’s past racist comments. The statements below are a selection, not a measure of how all wrestlers or fans felt.
What WWE said about Hogan’s legacy
WWE announced that Terry Bollea, known worldwide as Hulk Hogan, had died at 71. In its July 24, 2025 statement, the company credited Hogan with helping WWE achieve global recognition during the 1980s, when Hulkamania became a defining force in the promotion’s rise. WWE also pointed to his leadership of WCW’s New World Order in the 1990s as part of his enduring impact.

That account framed Hogan’s significance across two eras of televised wrestling. The Associated Press noted that he was a major draw at the first WrestleMania in 1985 and one of WWE’s biggest stars. These are the company’s and a news organization’s descriptions of his influence, not a measured ranking of wrestlers.
How wrestlers and colleagues remembered him
Friends spoke about the personal loss
Ric Flair, a longtime friend and fellow wrestler, wrote in a July 24 post quoted by WUSF: “I Am Absolutely Shocked To Hear About The Passing Of My Close Friend @HulkHogan! Hulk Has Been By My Side Since We Started In The Wrestling Business. An Incredible Athlete, Talent, Friend, And Father! Our Friendship Has Meant The World To Me.”

Brutus Beefcake, another longtime friend, recalled both affection and unfinished business. In a post quoted by WUSF, he wrote: “Through the good times and the bad, I always loved my brother Terry! I am devastated by the loss of my friend, I only wish we had time to mend our broken friendship before his passing.”
WWE figures and peers emphasized his stature
Triple H (Paul Levesque), WWE’s chief content officer, described Hogan’s place in the industry in a statement reported by the Associated Press: “WWE would not be where it is today without the larger-than-life characters that compete in the ring … and few, if any, loomed larger than Terry ‘Hulk Hogan’ Bollea.”

Wrestling announcer Jim Ross compared the loss to the death of a defining sports figure, saying, “I equate Hulk’s passing to MLB losing Babe Ruth. Hulk was the biggest star ever in pro wrestling.” Shawn Michaels called Hogan “A legend. A larger-than-life presence,” adding that he “didn’t just work in this business… he transformed it.” AP carried both remarks in its roundup.
Why public reactions were mixed
Alongside the tributes, coverage recorded negative and celebratory responses to Hogan’s death connected to his past use of racial slurs. Wrestling Observer/F4W reported that this history shaped some online reactions; WUSF likewise described responses that went beyond mourning. A Sports Illustrated roundup also gathered reactions in the immediate aftermath.

That criticism is part of the public response, but it does not stand in for every wrestler or fan. The reports do not provide survey figures showing how common any view was, so the reaction cannot be reduced to a consensus.

The reactions above were published on July 24 and 25, 2025, soon after WWE announced Hogan’s death. A separate AP report on July 31 said the Florida medical examiner classified the cause as a heart attack and the death as natural. AP also reported that Hogan had a history of leukemia and atrial fibrillation. Those later medical findings were not part of the initial tributes.
