Jessica Mauboy turned her chair for her niece Saraya Mauboy-Hudson during Saraya’s 2021 blind audition on The Voice Australia. Saraya sang Rihanna’s “Stay,” but the family reveal came only after the coaches had heard her perform: Mauboy recognized her niece and became tearful. Saraya ultimately chose Rita Ora as her coach.
Who is Saraya Mauboy-Hudson?
Saraya Mauboy-Hudson is Jessica Mauboy’s niece. A PerthNow feature published ahead of the audition presented the performance as a chance for Saraya to begin building her own music path while drawing inspiration from her aunt. PerthNow’s pre-audition feature introduced that family connection before the blind audition aired.

What happened in Saraya’s blind audition?
In the 2021 audition, Saraya performed Rihanna’s “Stay.” Rita Ora turned her chair first, followed by Mauboy and Guy Sebastian. According to PerthNow’s report, Saraya began nervously, then continued the performance as the coaches responded to her singing.
Mauboy did not know her niece would be on stage. After recognizing Saraya, she became visibly emotional. The report quotes her saying, “She’s my niece,” and later, “No, I’m not okay.” Ora praised Saraya’s “good control,” while Sebastian described her performance as “delicate.” These brief remarks are reproduced as PerthNow transcribed them from the episode.

Which coach did Saraya choose?
Although Mauboy and Sebastian also turned, Saraya chose Rita Ora as her coach. The order matters: Ora was the first to turn, but Saraya’s eventual decision came after all three coaches had responded.
