Geralt rides with his companions after being knighted, Yennefer vanishes into a dangerous sea portal while pursuing Vilgefortz, and Ciri—now using the name Falka—is captured by Leo Bonhart after he murders the Rats. The finale leaves all three stories unresolved ahead of the confirmed fifth and final season.
Where are Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri at the end?
Geralt is knighted, but his goal has changed
Geralt’s traveling company has become a found family: Jaskier, Milva, Cahir and Regis accompany him. At the Battle of the Bridge, Geralt helps defend the crossing and is knighted by Queen Meve, fulfilling an ambition he had as a boy. But the honor is not a straightforward happy ending. As showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Netflix Tudum, “It feels like it should be the perfect happy ending — it’s everything he ever dreamed of — but the truth is, his dreams have changed.” Geralt is now focused on finding Ciri and reuniting his family; the knighthood may also tie him to Meve’s service.

Yennefer disappears while hunting Vilgefortz
Yennefer helps organize the mages against Vilgefortz and supports the renewal of the Lodge of Sorceresses. She also discovers that the supposed Ciri in Nilfgaard is Teryn, a novice mage transformed into a decoy. After briefly reuniting with Geralt, Yennefer returns to Montecalvo, then decides to pursue Vilgefortz herself.
She asks Triss to use dried blood on Vesemir’s dagger to locate him and open a portal. Triss warns that Yennefer will arrive somewhere familiar to Vilgefortz but unknown to her. Yennefer emerges over a stormy sea, and a whirlpool pulls her under. The finale does not establish whether she dies or where she ends up.

Ciri is captured as Falka
Ciri has joined the Rats and is living under the name Falka. Bonhart traps the group and forces her to watch as he kills its members, including Mistle. He spares Ciri because he sees a potential fighter and wants to test her. She ends the season captured and bereaved, with the Falka identity and her powers still central to her story.
Her danger extends beyond Bonhart: Emhyr wants Ciri for a marriage connected to prophecy and his claim to the Continent. The finale leaves her agency and future uncertain.
Who dies in The Witcher season 4?
The deaths highlighted in the finale and its immediate aftermath include the Rats—Giselher, Asse, Iskra, Kayleigh, Reef and Mistle—and the mages Istredd, Margarita and Vesemir. Netflix Tudum details Bonhart’s killing of the Rats; TIME’s finale analysis names Istredd, Margarita and Vesemir among the Montecalvo casualties. This is the reported list of deaths foregrounded in those accounts, not a claim to inventory every death across the season.

How Istredd dies
During the battle at Montecalvo, Fringilla and Istredd work to restore the mages’ portals. Istredd casts a powerful spell from the Book of Monoliths, destroying Vilgefortz’s portal room at the cost of his life force. The act allows Yennefer to reach Nilfgaard, where she discovers that Teryn is posing as Ciri.

Why the finale matters
- The central family remains divided. Brief contact and shared aims do not bring Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri back together, leaving their search and reunion unresolved.
- Geralt’s honor contrasts with his priorities. His childhood dream comes true just as he cares more about finding his family than status.
- Yennefer chooses a direct confrontation. Her risky pursuit of Vilgefortz ends in a perilous disappearance, not a confirmed death.
- Ciri loses her chosen family. Bonhart’s capture and her Falka identity set up a darker, more violent chapter.
- The frame story points toward the saga’s legacy. A century later, the older Nimue sets out for Aretuza. Stribog suggests that the way the story ends may depend on her, making the future of Ciri’s legend part of the finale’s tease.
What is confirmed about The Witcher season 5?
Netflix announced season 5 as the final chapter in Geralt’s story. Its season 5 announcement says seasons 4 and 5 adapt the remaining Sapkowski novels: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and Lady of the Lake, and that the seasons would film back-to-back. The announcement does not give a release date, so a date should not be treated as confirmed on that basis.

The reunion attempt should remain the emotional center
All three leads end the season cut off from the others, while the story has made finding one another a shared hope. A renewed reunion attempt is a likely focus, but neither its timing nor its outcome is established.
Ciri’s struggle for agency will continue
Captured by Bonhart, separated from the Rats and wanted by Emhyr, Ciri faces competing attempts to control her. Her escape plan and eventual fate remain unknown.
Yennefer’s fate and Vilgefortz’s threat need answers
The sea and whirlpool leave Yennefer’s immediate survival unresolved, while Vilgefortz remains a threat. The finale also leaves open what the Lodge can do to protect Ciri.

Geralt’s companions are likely to matter
Netflix’s season 4 setup and finale frame Geralt’s traveling group as a new family. Their importance to the final search is a reasonable expectation, but the announcement does not establish any companion’s individual fate.
Nimue’s frame story may connect to the ending
Nimue is heading to Aretuza, and Stribog hints that she may affect how the saga concludes. That is a narrative tease, not confirmation of the precise role she will play.
