Kathy Bates played Molly Brown in James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic. The character is based on the real Margaret Brown, but the film presents a dramatized screen portrayal rather than a complete biography.

Was Molly Brown a real person?
Yes. Molly Brown is the film’s depiction of Margaret Brown, a real historical figure. The Margaret Brown Museum’s Titanic tour material describes Cameron’s portrayal as capturing aspects of Brown’s spirit, including concern for people less fortunate, while distinguishing the screen character from the highly educated philanthropist of real life.
That distinction matters: Bates plays a character inspired by a real person, not a documentary reconstruction. The museum’s description supports a broad comparison, but it does not establish the accuracy of particular scenes or make the film a full account of Brown’s life.
