What was the relationship between Will Smith and Margot Robbie?
Their documented connection was professional: they starred together in the 2015 film Focus. In a 2015 interview with The Independent, Robbie said she and Smith got along immediately and had rapport. In the film, their characters, Jess and Nicky, become lovers. That fictional storyline and the actors’ rapport do not establish a romantic relationship off screen.

Why did people ask whether they were dating or having an affair?
In November 2013, after filming Focus in New Orleans, Star magazine publicized photo-booth images of Smith and Robbie. The images prompted speculation that they were dating or having an affair, but the photos alone do not establish either claim.
E! News reported on November 6, 2013, that an unnamed source said the booth had been commissioned by the production, was on set during the day, and that cast and crew saw the photos being taken. The source characterized Smith and Robbie as friends. This was an anonymous-source account, not a statement from a named production representative or independently documented proof.

What did Margot Robbie say about the 2013 rumor?
Robbie responded publicly the following day. In its November 8, 2013 report, ABC News quoted her tweet: “There’s absolutely no truth to the ridiculous rumor in Star mag…” She added: “…It’s disappointing that goofing around on set could be taken so out of context.”
Her statement is a direct, named denial. The photos and the anonymous account about how they were taken provide context for the rumor; neither is evidence that the actors had a private romance.

Does Jada Pinkett Smith’s later separation disclosure change the story?
No. In an Associated Press interview published October 17, 2023, Jada Pinkett Smith said she and Will Smith had been separated for seven years, while remaining married, and that they were still trying to understand their relationship. That later disclosure concerns the Smiths; it does not establish any relationship between Will Smith and Robbie or retroactively validate the 2013 rumor.
