There is no single, context-free winner established by the comic stories covered here. Superman and the Flash have raced in multiple issues, and each result belongs to its own version of the characters, objective, and conditions—not to a universal speed ranking.
Why the answer depends on the race
“Who is faster?” sounds like a question with one finish line, but the comics present more than one race. A story can set a particular objective or unusual stakes, and its outcome answers that story’s contest. It does not automatically settle every comparison between Superman and every version of the Flash.
It also matters what kind of speed is being compared. Running speed, travel speed, and a feat tied to a special power are not interchangeable measures. The historical references below establish that the races occurred and describe some of their context; they do not provide a standardized measurement across those categories or a definitive ruling for all continuities.
Published Superman-and-Flash races
| Story | What is established | What it can tell you |
| Superman vol. 1 #199, “Superman’s Race with the Flash!” | The comic reference page lists the issue and an August 1967 publication date. See the comic reference. | A classic published race, but its existence and bibliographic details alone do not establish a winner applicable to other stories. |
| The Flash #175 | A comic inventory identifies another Superman-versus-Flash race and dates it to December 1967. See the comic inventory. | A separate issue demonstrates that the comparison recurs; it should be treated as its own contest. |
| World’s Finest Comics #198–199 | A retrospective describes a cosmic race assigned by the Guardians of the Universe, with the heroes trying to address the Anachronids’ destructive course. Read the retrospective. | Its extraordinary stakes and objective make it a different kind of race from a simple sprint. |
How to judge a claim that one of them won
- Identify the exact story. Check the issue and the version or continuity being discussed; do not combine outcomes from separate comics into one result.
- Look at the race’s objective and conditions. A cosmic mission or other special contest may test more than straight-line running.
- Separate the story’s finish from a general ranking. A character winning one race is evidence about that story, not proof that the character is always faster.
- Specify the kind of speed. A claim about running should not silently become a claim about travel or a power-related feat.
Where to read the classic races
For a concrete starting point, look for “Superman’s Race with the Flash!” in Superman vol. 1 #199, then compare it with The Flash #175. The reference page for Superman #199 lists later collected and reprinted editions, but current availability, a particular edition, and its price are not established here. The issue references and retrospective are useful for identifying the stories; they are not a substitute for checking the actual race and its ending.
