Vogue’s December 2023 profile gives more detail: Minaj’s parents left Trinidad for New York when she was three, leaving her with her grandmother, then brought her and her older brother to South Jamaica, Queens, about two years later. The accounts describe a broadly compatible transition but frame its sequence differently.
What has Minaj said about poverty and family life?
Minaj has recalled that her family had little money. In Vogue, she remembered a fourth-grade classmate asking, “You think your mother could afford that?” after Minaj wanted a pair of boots. She reflected, “Children know a lot more than you think regarding poverty.” These are her memories of childhood, not a measure of her family’s finances.

An earlier 2010 FADER profile recounts Minaj’s description of a difficult, unstable home environment, including her father’s substance abuse, and her mother’s efforts to hold the family together. Those details should be understood as part of Minaj’s reported account, not as independently adjudicated facts. In Vogue, Minaj summed up the weight she felt as a child: “I had adult burdens way too early,”
How did her mother, church, and music shape her childhood?
Minaj has described her mother as a major influence. Vogue reports that she attended a Pentecostal church with her mother, and The FADER recounts Minaj remembering that they sang together. She has also described music as a form of escape. Those strands of her childhood—family, faith, and music—appear in her own recollections as sources of connection and expression amid instability.

When did Nicki Minaj start performing and rapping?
Minaj attended LaGuardia High School in New York and pursued acting before her music career. She has said she began rapping at about age 12; the 2010 FADER profile recounts her early musical ambitions. The biographical record also notes her acting interest, but it does not establish that every childhood ambition pointed toward a later career as a rapper.

Minaj’s childhood story is available through biographical accounts and, especially, her own interviews. Those sources support a picture of migration from Trinidad to Queens, time with her grandmother, financial hardship, family instability as she described it, and the influence of her mother, church, and music. They do not turn painful personal recollections into independently verified facts, nor do they justify embellishing the story beyond what she and the cited profiles report.
