Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s public alliance ruptured in June 2025 after Musk attacked Trump’s major spending and tax bill. Trump answered with personal criticism and a threat to cut government contracts and subsidies tied to Musk’s companies. The argument unfolded on X and Truth Social; later gestures suggested a thaw, but did not prove the pair had privately restored their former closeness.

What triggered the Trump–Musk split?

The immediate trigger was policy, not a documented private falling-out. Musk objected to Trump’s major spending and tax legislation, calling it “a disgusting abomination” in a post on X. The Associated Press and Axios identified opposition to the bill as the flashpoint in the dispute. The AP’s account and Axios’s timeline trace how a disagreement over legislation became a highly personal public fight.

The contrast with just days earlier was striking. At a May 30, 2025, Oval Office event marking Musk’s departure from his government role, Trump praised him as “one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced.” Musk said he would keep visiting and be “a friend and adviser to the president,” according to the AP. Those remarks show the warmth of their public presentation at the time, not a guarantee that the relationship would remain close.

How did the argument become personal?

On June 5, the disagreement escalated across their own social platforms. Trump wrote on Truth Social that Musk had “gone CRAZY” and threatened to terminate government subsidies and contracts connected to Musk’s businesses. Musk responded on X with attacks on Trump and a call for his impeachment. The threats and insults were public statements; the reporting does not establish that Trump carried out the threatened contract or subsidy cuts.

Trump also said he had taken away Musk’s “EV Mandate.” That was Trump’s description in his post, not a neutral technical account. The AP reported that Musk’s political spending in 2024 topped $250 million to help elect Trump and other Republicans; that figure is not an amount given solely to Trump.

What happened after the June blowup?

Musk said some posts went too far

On June 11, Reuters reported Musk said he regretted some of his posts about Trump because they “went too far.” That is evidence of regret over some of his public remarks, not confirmation that the men had privately reconciled. Reuters reported the statement.

They interacted at Charlie Kirk’s memorial

On September 21, 2025, Trump and Musk shook hands and interacted at Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in Glendale, Arizona. Axios described the encounter as a sign of thawing after roughly three months of estrangement. It establishes that they were seen interacting in public; it does not establish that their earlier alliance had been fully restored. Axios covered the memorial interaction.

Later political activity was read as another thaw signal

In December 2025, Axios reported that Musk had begun funding Republican House and Senate campaigns for the 2026 midterms, interpreting the activity as evidence that his relationship with Trump had thawed. That is the outlet’s reading of political behavior, rather than direct proof of a private reconciliation. Axios reported on Musk’s campaign activity.

What the public record does—and does not—show

  • The cause is clear: Musk’s opposition to Trump’s spending and tax bill became the public trigger.
  • The rhetoric became personal and consequential: Trump threatened contract and subsidy cuts, while Musk attacked Trump. A threat is not evidence that the action happened.
  • The fight was unusually visible: Their posts on X and Truth Social made the escalation easy to follow in dated public statements.
  • There were later signs of de-escalation: Musk expressed regret about some posts, and the two interacted at the September memorial.
  • Private status remains unverified: Reporting through December 2025 described signs of warming, but does not establish that the old closeness returned or reveal what the men discussed privately.
