Spoilers for IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1, Episode 7, “The Black Spot.” Rich dies protecting Marge during the fire at the Black Spot, which a racist mob traps and burns while searching for Hank Grogan. After the fire, General Shaw tells Leroy he wants to use Pennywise to frighten Americans into unity. That is Shaw’s stated intention—not proof that he can control the creature or achieve his goal.
What happens to Rich in Episode 7?
Rich gets Marge to safety inside a cooler as fire and smoke overwhelm the Black Spot. He remains exposed to the danger and dies. His choice is the episode’s intimate tragedy inside a larger atrocity: the Black Spot is a refuge for Black soldiers and their community, and a mob sets it alight.
Director and executive producer Andy Muschietti told TheWrap that the story needed a major death, though the creators had not initially settled on who would die. Rich and Marge’s developing romance made the decision especially painful. Muschietti described the tragedy as part of a love story without a happy ending.
Why does the Black Spot burn?
A masked mob arrives looking for Hank Grogan. When the people inside refuse to hand him over, the attackers block ways out and set the club on fire. The result is a mass-casualty attack, not an accidental blaze.

Episode coverage from TV Insider says Ingrid orchestrated the attack in the hope of summoning Pennywise. She believes the creature is her long-dead father, Bob Gray; that belief is part of her delusion, not the truth about Pennywise.
The episode also gives Dick Hallorann a more active role in the crisis. Muschietti told TheWrap that Dick faces a choice between saving himself and trying to help others with his Shining. His attempt to reach people inside the burning building adds another dimension to the danger.

What is General Shaw’s plan?
After the fire, Shaw tells Leroy that he wants to use Pennywise against Americans. He argues that the country is fracturing and that shared fear could prevent another civil war. In Shaw’s view, fear is a political tool that can make people listen.
That is Shaw’s rationale, not a demonstrated solution. The episode reveals his willingness to weaponize a predatory supernatural force, but it does not show that he can direct Pennywise or make the creature produce the unity he claims to want. Esquire’s recap reproduces Shaw’s dialogue, including his claim that “the one thing that makes people listen is fear”; those words are reported dialogue, not an independently verified transcript.

How does Episode 7 expand Stephen King’s novel?
“The Black Spot” adapts an episode from Stephen King’s It. Muschietti told TheWrap that the novel gives relatively sparse details about the event, and that the series sought to honor its spirit while intensifying the danger of escape. In the show, exits are blocked and gunfire makes attempts to get out more perilous.
The adaptation also foregrounds Dick Hallorann’s effort to use the Shining to help people in the club. Comparing the two versions, then, comes down to how much of the attack is shown, how escape is made more dangerous on screen, and how directly Dick intervenes.

The episode’s opening connects Pennywise to Bob Gray, a travelling-carnival performer, through the perspective of his daughter Ingrid. Later, Ingrid’s attempt to reconnect with the figure she calls her father collides with Pennywise’s predatory identity. The attack and the episode’s closing threat leave the season’s conflict unresolved.
For additional production context, the official companion podcast’s Episode 7 listing says Andy and Barbara Muschietti, production designer Paul Austerberry, and composer Benjamin Wallfisch discuss the origin story, the fall of the Black Spot, production design, and music. The listing describes the conversation’s guests and subjects; it is not a transcript.
