Miley Cyrus’s parents filed to change her legal name in 2008 so it would match the name she had commonly used since childhood. She was born Destiny Hope Cyrus; “Miley” came from the childhood nickname “Smiley,” while “Destiny Hope” reflected her parents’ belief that she would bring hope to the world. Those are the names’ family origins, distinct from the formal reason given in the name-change filing.
Why did Miley Cyrus change her name?
The stated legal reason was straightforward: Cyrus was commonly known as Miley, and her parents sought to make that name her legal name. Contemporary reporting quoted the filing as saying, “The Change of Name is requested to make her commonly used name the same as her legal name.” TMZ reproduced the filing’s wording; it was the court document’s explanation, not a statement by Cyrus.
On March 17, 2008, the Associated Press reported that her parents had filed in Los Angeles Superior Court to change her full legal name from Destiny Hope Cyrus to Miley Ray Cyrus. The reports establish the filing and its stated purpose; they do not establish the date a court order making the change final was issued. The Associated Press report covered the request at the time.
How did she get the name “Miley”?
“Miley” grew out of the childhood nickname “Smiley.” In a Washington Post interview published December 27, 2006, Cyrus said her parents liked the name because she smiled and giggled from birth, while her grandmother insisted on Destiny Hope. She recalled: “My grandma insists on that name [Destiny Hope], but my mom and my dad love the name Miley cuz ever since I was born I was always smiling and giggling.” The Washington Post interview is her own account of the nickname’s origin.

What did “Destiny Hope” mean?
Cyrus later explained that her parents chose Destiny Hope because they believed it was her destiny to bring hope to the world. A Miami Herald report published June 13, 2024, recounting her conversation with David Letterman, quoted her saying her parents “thought it was my destiny to bring hope to the world.” She also described the name as a lot to carry. The Miami Herald report provides context for her birth name, not a different explanation for the 2008 legal filing.

The record supports a practical explanation: the filing sought to align Cyrus’s legal name with the one she already used. Her comments explain how her parents arrived at the names Miley and Destiny Hope. The cited accounts do not support claims that she changed her name to escape fame, improve her career, reject her birth name, or because of family conflict.
