“Unsellable” is a claim about commercial risk, not a verdict on whether a film is worth seeing. Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis reached theaters in the United States and Canada in 2024 after reports that one studio executive doubted its marketability. That gap—between a film’s perceived sales prospects and its artistic ambition—is exactly why the conversation around it matters.
What “unsellable” actually tells us
In an April 2024 essay, WIRED’s Angela Watercutter recounted an unnamed studio head’s negative reaction to an early screening of Megalopolis. The executive’s reported skepticism became a shorthand for the film’s apparent difficulty finding a conventional commercial pitch. It was one person’s view, however—not proof that Hollywood as a whole had rejected the film, and not a measure of its artistic value. Watercutter also disclosed that she had not seen the film, making her piece an argument about risk and cultural possibility rather than a review. WIRED, April 12, 2024.

The distinction matters. A studio may worry that an unconventional film will be hard to market or have limited box-office potential. That concern can shape which projects get financed and distributed, but it cannot settle whether an audience should encounter the work. Nor does calling a film “unsellable” establish how it ultimately performed financially.
What kind of film is Megalopolis?
Megalopolis is a science-fiction fable set in New Rome, a future city that mixes New York and ancient Roman imagery. Adam Driver plays Cesar Catilina, an architect and inventor who imagines a utopian city. Giancarlo Esposito plays Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who opposes Cesar’s plan, while Nathalie Emmanuel plays Julia, the mayor’s daughter and Cesar’s love interest. That premise signals a film built around large ideas and heightened imagery rather than an easily summarized genre formula. Its central conflict—an ambitious vision for a city set against political opposition—also gives the story a recognizable dramatic frame, even as its scale and style depart from standard studio storytelling.
Why the project’s scale became part of the debate
The film was a decades-long project. Glasgow Film Theatre’s programme notes report that Coppola financed it with more than $120 million of his own money; WIRED described it as an approximately $120 million epic. These are reported figures, not a confirmed final audited production cost, and they should not be confused with marketing expenses. Glasgow Film Theatre; WIRED.

That personal commitment helps explain why the film’s commercial prospects became part of its public story. It does not, by itself, prove that the gamble succeeded or failed. The available accounts here do not establish a box-office total or profitability figure, so “unsellable” should remain a description of reported pre-release skepticism—not a financial conclusion.
It reached theaters, and its presentation divided opinion
In June 2024, the Associated Press reported that Lionsgate would distribute Megalopolis theatrically in the United States and Canada, with a September 27 release date. The film therefore made it to North American theaters despite the earlier speculation about whether it could be sold. Associated Press, June 17, 2024.

Accounts of its reception underline how unusual the experience could be without establishing a single, universal response. Rafa Sales Ross’s Glasgow Film Theatre notes recall gasps and laughter at Cannes and describe a screening that could feel amusing or baffling. The Associated Press also described a live moment in which a performer appeared onstage to address a character projected on screen. These are specific accounts of reactions and presentation, not evidence that every viewer responded the same way. Glasgow Film Theatre; Associated Press, September 24, 2024.

In a September 2024 Associated Press interview, Coppola rejected the idea that filmmakers must follow a fixed set of rules to make a film easy to sell. He compared that approach to making Coca-Cola, where predictability helps reduce sales risk, and argued that cinema should remain “alive and ever-changing.” Associated Press, September 24, 2024.

That is an artistic position, not proof that unconventional filmmaking is commercially viable. Its value is that it names the tension at the heart of the debate: a film can be difficult to package precisely because it is trying something that a familiar formula would not allow. Seeing Megalopolis is a way to encounter that attempt for yourself rather than treating a marketability argument as the final word.
