Paramount’s planned live-action adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is on hold, not confirmed canceled. The studio announced it in 2024 as an R-rated project, but Variety reported in November 2025 that Paramount had paused it while developing another live-action TMNT film. What happened to the live-action Last Ronin movie?
Paramount announced the adaptation at CinemaCon in April 2024. In November 2025, Variety reported that the studio had put it on hold while it developed a separate live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles project. Variety’s sources said The Last Ronin might be revisited, but likely not soon. The report described a pause, not a formal cancellation announcement from Paramount.
That makes the project’s status uncertain: it has been announced and then put on hold, with no confirmed restart or release date. In 2026, TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman said he thought the movie was delayed and “not off the table.” That is Eastman’s view, as reported by GamesRadar+, not a new confirmation from Paramount.
What was announced, and what was not confirmed?
The 2024 announcement described a live-action adaptation intended to be R-rated. That was a development plan, not an official rating for a completed film. TheWrap reported that Walter Hamada would produce and Tyler Burton Smith would write the screenplay. Variety later reported that Ilya Naishuller was in talks to direct; that reporting does not establish a confirmed appointment.

What is The Last Ronin about?
The comic is set in a distant future where the grandson of Shredder rules New York. Michelangelo is the last surviving Turtle after his brothers and Master Splinter have been killed. He reunites with April O’Neil and her daughter, Casey Marie, and sets out to defeat Shredder’s descendant. The premise is notably darker than the usual ensemble adventures, which is consistent with the announced R-rated intent—but the intended rating should not be mistaken for a final film classification.

Is this the next TMNT movie?
Not on the available reporting. Variety separately reported that Paramount was developing another live-action TMNT film with producer Neal H. Moritz, reportedly with a family-friendly approach. Separately, a February 2026 Paramount and Mattel licensing announcement mentions an untitled live-action/CG animation hybrid planned for 2028. The announcement does not identify that hybrid as The Last Ronin, and the cited reporting does not establish whether it is the same production as Variety’s other live-action project. Neither should be described as a replacement adaptation without confirmation.
There is also a separate The Last Ronin video game. Paramount Games Studio and PlatinumGames announced the action-adventure game in June 2026; it is based on the same comic, not evidence that the film has resumed. See Gematsu’s announcement. The separate licensing partnership and its merchandise plans are described in the Paramount and Mattel release; those franchise products are not evidence of film tie-ins.

What to read while the movie is on hold
The The Last Ronin graphic novel is the direct way to experience the story the adaptation was meant to draw from, regardless of whether the film proceeds. Check the edition and current availability when buying: the cited reporting establishes the source work, but not a specific edition, ISBN, price, or listing.
