1883 and 1923 tell consecutive chapters of the fictional Dutton family saga: 1883 follows James Dutton and his family west to Montana, where they establish their ranch, while 1923 picks up about 40 years later as James’s brother Jacob and Jacob’s wife Cara try to protect it. James’s younger son Spencer also links the stories, returning to help save the ranch in 1923.
How the Dutton family story moves from 1883 to 1923
1883: the journey and the founding
1883 centers on James Dutton, his wife Margaret, and their children as they travel west in a wagon train. The journey ends with the establishment of the family’s Montana ranch, making the series the saga’s founding chapter. Paramount+ describes James as a forerunner of John Dutton III, the present-day patriarch in Yellowstone. Paramount+’s series guide provides the official descriptions of both shows.
1923: the ranch’s next generation
1923 takes place about 40 years after the ranch’s founding. James’s brother Jacob and Jacob’s wife Cara lead the Dutton family through the Prohibition-era Mountain West, facing a harsh winter and a mining tycoon. The approximate interval comes from Paramount+’s 2025 description; it is not an exact count of years between every event in the two series.
Who connects the two series?
| Character or link | Connection |
|---|---|
| James Dutton | Central Dutton in 1883; his family’s westward journey establishes the ranch. Paramount+ calls him a forerunner of John Dutton III. |
| Jacob Dutton | James’s brother; he and his wife Cara lead the family in 1923. |
| Spencer Dutton | James’s younger son. In 1923, he returns with Alexandra to help save the ranch. |
| The Montana ranch | The destination and founding outcome of 1883, and the family’s threatened inheritance in 1923. |
Paramount+’s Dutton family timeline, published May 27, 2026, identifies Spencer as James’s younger son and describes his return to help save the ranch.

What changes between the shows?
| 1883 | 1923 | |
|---|---|---|
| Story role | Migration west and establishment of the ranch | Protecting the ranch and carrying the family into a new era |
| Family leadership | James and Margaret’s family | James’s brother Jacob and Jacob’s wife Cara |
| Setting in the saga | The Duttons’ founding journey | About 40 years after the ranch’s founding, according to Paramount+’s 2025 guide |
That contrast is the simplest way to follow the connection: the earlier series explains how the Duttons came to Montana; the later one shows the family struggling to keep what they established.
How to understand the shows’ historical framing
Both series are fictional dramas, not documentaries. A 2023 analysis in Public History Weekly considers Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923 as popular media that shape cultural memory of the American West. It notes that 1883 frames events through Elsa Dutton’s voice, while still presenting history from a white perspective. That is a useful critical lens for viewers, but it does not change the fictional family relationships or the story’s timeline. Read the Public History Weekly analysis.
