Abrams hosts the official five-page PDF reading guide. It is a companion to the novel, with a brief synopsis, author biographies, endorsements, and prompts organized around all 23 chapters. The guide bears a 2021 illustration copyright line.
The book’s production-within-the-story is Wicked. The Wizard of Oz appears as a discussion point in the novel, but the PDF is not a standalone character guide to the Wizard of Oz or a study guide to the musical.
What the novel and guide cover
Thirteen-year-old Nat Beacon uses a wheelchair for mobility and loves musical theater. After her family moves from California to New Jersey, she auditions for a local children’s production of Wicked and joins the ensemble. The guide follows the story’s questions about belonging, access, friendship, self-advocacy, and who gets to be seen as a performer.

Rather than offering only plot-recall questions, it asks readers to interpret decisions and feelings, reflect on their own experiences, and imagine scenes, letters, monologues, text exchanges, or songs. It also invites discussion of theater choices—including casting, choreography, staging, and collaboration.

Early chapters: change, music, and first impressions
Early prompts explore moving and making a home, music as an escape, identifying with a character, asking parents for support, preparing to audition, and meeting potential friends. Readers can connect Nat’s reactions to their own experiences without treating those experiences as interchangeable.

Middle chapters: representation and making theater accessible
The middle section turns to representation in Wicked, assumptions about casting, the director’s choices, adapted choreography, collaboration, disability consultation, friendship, body image, and Nat’s decisions about self-disclosure. Questions about Nessarose and staging offer a concrete way to discuss agency and representation: one fictional character’s experience should not be taken as representative of every wheelchair user.
Later chapters: conflict, repair, and performance
Later prompts address exclusion and conflict, restoring the show, what “flying” means, support from friends and family, and Nat’s performance as Elphaba. They invite readers to consider the significance of being recognized as someone who can perform, as well as the choices and relationships that help make that possible in the story.

Ways to use the guide in a classroom or book group
- Discuss character and motivation: Ask what Nat is feeling, why she makes a particular choice, and how the people around her respond.
- Connect reflection with close reading: Pair personal-response prompts with evidence from the relevant chapter, so discussion distinguishes a reader’s experience from what the text establishes.
- Try a creative response: Have readers write an imagined scene, letter, monologue, text exchange, or song inspired by a character or moment.
- Examine production decisions: Discuss how casting, choreography, staging, and collaboration shape who can participate and how a character is portrayed.
- Make musical-theater connections: The National Education Association’s classroom resource suggests distinguishing “I Am” and “I Want” songs, writing a song for Nat, and discussing disability, assumptions about ability, and inclusion.
Questions such as “What’s the significance of the title?” and “What were some of the challenges Nat faced?” can open discussion, but the most productive follow-up is specific: which scene supports an interpretation, whose point of view is being considered, and what choices could the characters or production team make differently?
