A definitive current ranking cannot be established from the available genre-specific evidence. The verified historical record identifies The Mermaid (Mei Ren Yu) at US$552,198,479 worldwide, according to a Guinness World Records entry dated January 12, 2018. That is a dated record claim—not confirmation that the film remains the current leader.

Why this is not a current top-ten ranking
A ranked list needs a current worldwide total for each qualifying film, drawn from one consistent source and genre definition. The available evidence does not establish those comparable figures. Box Office Mojo’s worldwide lifetime-gross chart includes worldwide, domestic, and foreign grosses and release years, but the chart segment available here is not filtered by genre, so it does not identify the highest-grossing rom-coms. Box Office Mojo’s worldwide lifetime-gross chart
The Numbers has an international romantic-comedy chart, but “international” is not the same as worldwide: its definition excludes the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Its chart is not adjusted for inflation. Those figures cannot be substituted for worldwide totals in a worldwide ranking. The Numbers’ international romantic-comedy chart

How to interpret “highest-grossing”
Worldwide is different from international
A worldwide gross includes domestic and international theatrical revenue; an international-only figure omits specified territories. Combining one film’s international gross with another film’s worldwide gross would make the comparison misleading.
Reported totals are not inflation-adjusted
The cited Guinness figure is a reported nominal gross, not an inflation-adjusted estimate. Nominal rankings do not measure how many tickets films sold, and comparisons across release eras are affected by changing ticket prices and the scope of box-office reporting.
Rank #2
Genre boundaries matter
Romantic comedy is not a universally applied box-office category. Guinness describes The Mermaid as a fantasy adventure while also classifying it as a romantic-comedy record holder. A comprehensive ranking would need to state whether films that blend romance and comedy with fantasy, animation, or other genres qualify.

To answer “Which romantic comedy has made the most money worldwide?” with a current ranked list, every candidate should be compared using the same worldwide-gross source and the same inclusion rule. Each entry should identify its release year and whether the reported cumulative total includes re-releases. The available record entry supplies a worldwide figure for one film, but does not state a re-release breakdown or provide comparable figures for other candidates.
