Five points stand out: what “Dixie” meant to the band, what the song “Tights on My Boat” did—and did not—claim, advice about old merchandise, the band’s label plans at the time, and Maines’s mixed memories of the 2016 CMA Awards.
1. The band’s unease was about “Dixie,” not the word “Chicks”
Maines said the band had received criticism for “Chicks,” but that “Dixie” was the part of its name that made the members uncomfortable. They were not from the region and, she said, had not considered the word’s history or how it might make Black people feel. Maines explained that the name change was a statement. She also said, “We didn’t have the name Dixie Chicks because we’re racist.”
2. The tights in “Tights on My Boat” were fictional
Maines said the tights in the Gaslighter song were not a literal detail of a real incident: “I hate to disappoint, but that’s not true. That’s just fun.” She clarified that she was not denying a boat was involved. The distinction matters: the song’s tights should not be treated as evidence of infidelity.
3. Maines said fans did not need to discard old merchandise
Maines said she, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire consulted Black Lives Matter leaders about changing the band’s name. Asked whether older pressings of the band’s albums needed to be changed, she recalled being told no. That was guidance in the 2020 interview about existing merchandise, not an announcement about later reissues or current product policy.

4. The label decision was still open in 2020
Rolling Stone reported that the band had fulfilled its Sony contract with Gaslighter. Maines said the group would consider Sony’s offer as well as offers from other labels, and she did not think the band would release its next album independently. Those were her comments at the time; they describe the band’s plans after Gaslighter as of 2020, not its current label status.
5. The 2016 CMA Awards felt awkward, but working with Beyoncé was a career high
Maines recalled that The Chicks had not attended country awards shows since the controversy and that the atmosphere at the 2016 CMA Awards felt less welcoming. She also spoke warmly about working with Beyoncé, calling it “the single greatest working week of my professional life.” Maines praised Beyoncé’s power as a female performer and as a Black woman in music.
