Teri Hatcher stars as Ruth Finley, with Tahmoh Penikett as her husband, Ed. The film is presented as a true-story title, but the available listings do not establish which events are independently documented or how closely the dramatization follows them.
What is The Killer Inside: The Ruth Finley Story about?
Lifetime’s synopsis describes Ruth and Ed Finley living a tranquil life in Wichita, Kansas, until Ed suffers a heart attack. Ruth then receives threatening letters amid the city’s fear of BTK. The synopsis says she is abducted and soon reappears, after which investigators consider whether someone close to her was responsible. These are details of the film’s promoted story, not independently verified facts about the real Finleys.

BTK serves as the backdrop to the suspense: the story places the couple in a city living with fear of the killer. A contemporaneous account of the BTK case is available from The Wichita Eagle, but that coverage does not establish the events involving Ruth and Ed Finley.
Is the film based on a true story?
The film is listed as a true-story suspense title, but that label alone does not verify the specific events shown. The official synopsis supplies a premise; the available historical material does not provide a sufficiently detailed, authoritative account of Ruth Finley’s case to confirm the threats, abduction, investigation, or the film’s accuracy. Treat those elements as the film’s account unless they are corroborated by reliable reporting or primary records.
#1 Best Overall
For background on the BTK case itself—not as a biography of Ruth Finley or a companion to the film—Roy Wenzl, Tim Potter, Hurst Laviana, and L. Kelly’s book Bind, Torture, Kill: The Inside Story of BTK, the Serial Killer Next Door covers the investigation.
