The title refers to a Jimmy Kimmel segment in which children are asked to explain gay marriage. BGR described it as a humorous response to the claim that same-sex marriage is difficult to explain to children, publishing its account in the week after the U.S. Supreme Court’s nationwide ruling on same-sex marriage in 2015. The available article text does not provide a transcript, so the children’s exact words cannot be verified from that account.
What is the “Kids Explain Gay Marriage” video?
It is a Jimmy Kimmel video segment that BGR’s Chris Smith covered on July 2, 2015. BGR’s article embeds the clip and says Kimmel asked children to explain gay marriage. The article’s accessible text does not identify the children or reproduce their dialogue. Read BGR’s July 2, 2015 article.
Why was the clip in the news?
BGR situated the segment in the week after the Supreme Court’s nationwide same-sex-marriage ruling. It framed the clip as a test of the argument that same-sex marriage is hard to explain to children. That is BGR’s characterization of the segment and its context, not evidence that children generally find the subject difficult—or that the clip establishes how children understand it.
How popular was it at the time?
BGR reported in 2015 that the YouTube clip had received “more than 4.3 million views in less than a day.” That figure is a contemporaneous report from the article; it is not a current view count or an independently verified platform statistic.

What can—and can’t—be confirmed about the video?
- Confirmed by BGR’s article: the segment involved Jimmy Kimmel asking children to explain gay marriage, and the article embedded the clip.
- Not established by the accessible article text: the children’s identities, their exact words, and fuller production details.
- Not established here: whether the original YouTube video is currently available or how many views it has now.
Because the article supplies no transcript and the clip’s current availability is unverified, specific lines or reactions should not be attributed to the children based on BGR’s text alone.
