For the most complete telling of The Muppet Christmas Carol, choose the full-length version that restores Belle’s song, “When Love Is Gone.” Director Brian Henson recommended that cut in a July 2025 interview, arguing that the song strengthens the story and Michael Caine’s performance. His recommendation concerns Disney+; availability and labels can vary by country and may change.
What changes in the full-length version?
The key documented difference is the return of “When Love Is Gone,” written by Paul Williams and performed by Meredith Braun as Belle. In the scene, Belle leaves young Scrooge as his devotion to money begins to eclipse their relationship. The song is integrated into the film rather than simply offered as an unrelated bonus.
The sequence was removed from the film’s initial theatrical release. Henson later said the cut was meant to be temporary, with the song expected to return after the initial theatrical engagement. But the original negative was lost, delaying its restoration. A first-run inter-positive containing the sequence was eventually found; Henson said it provided a better source than using a cut negative with damage at the splice. Why the song matters to the story
“When Love Is Gone” makes the cost of Scrooge’s choices specific: it shows a relationship he lost, not just the wealth he accumulated. Williams told TheWrap, “It shows you what he lost,” and described the number as advancing the story by revealing Scrooge’s inner life. The film’s ending also reprises its musical idea as “When Love Is Found,” giving the earlier song a connection to Scrooge’s change.

That is why the restored sequence plays as part of the film’s emotional and musical structure, rather than as an incidental deleted scene. Henson told TheaterMania that its inclusion makes the story stronger and improves Caine’s performance. Read the July 11, 2025 interview with Henson.
Where to look for the full-length version
In that July 2025 interview, Henson told viewers to select the full-length version on Disney+. TheWrap had reported in December 2022 that the restored cut was available there in 4K. These are dated reports, not a guarantee of what Disney+ carries in every country today. Check the title’s version label and playback details in your local catalog; the service’s language versions and interface labels may differ.

The Museum of the Moving Image described a 2025 screening as the full, uncut 1992 version featuring “When Love Is Gone,” and listed that event’s copy at 85 minutes. That runtime identifies the scheduled screening version, not necessarily every streaming or home-video encode. See the museum’s screening notice.

Physical releases may suit viewers who want to own a copy, but the format alone does not establish that a particular edition contains the restored sequence. TheWrap reported that the song appeared on a 1993 VHS release and discussed a British home-video release as a source for the sequence. Those historical references do not verify the contents of currently sold DVDs or other editions. Before buying, check the edition’s description or confirm that it includes the full-length cut with “When Love Is Gone.”
