The series never reveals Dr. Gaius Baltar as one of the humanoid Cylon models. The lingering mystery is spiritual: what Head Six and Baltar’s visions mean, and how divine agency operates in the story. That ambiguity is not a canonical reveal about his species.
Why did viewers suspect Baltar was a Cylon?
The question was part of the show’s deliberate suspense. In a 2006 interview, while the series was still unfolding, creator Ronald D. Moore said: “Baltar may or may not be the Cylon God and he may or may not be a Cylon and both questions will be raised (but not necessarily answered) this year.” Read Moore’s 2006 interview.
That comment records an open question during production; it is not a confirmation that Baltar was a Cylon. His unusual relationship with Head Six and the visions associated with her also invited viewers to consider spiritual explanations. Those elements deepen the mystery without establishing that he is a humanoid Cylon model.
What does the completed series establish?
Across the completed 2004 series, Baltar is not identified as one of the humanoid Cylon models. The distinction matters: a character can be central to the story’s religious or supernatural questions without being biologically or politically a Cylon. Moore’s post-finale comments preserve ambiguity around the spiritual framing; they do not overturn the series’ lack of a Cylon-identity reveal for Baltar.

Discussing the finale’s larger ambiguity in a post-finale interview, Moore said: “There’s a lot of different ways you can look at it, but the more we talked about it, the more we realized there was more in the ambiguity and mystery of it than there was in trying to give it more definition in the end.” He was discussing the finale’s spiritual interpretation and Kara Thrace’s ambiguity, not specifically declaring Baltar’s species. Does Baltar survive the nuclear blast because he is a Cylon?
No. Moore gave a direct physical explanation for Baltar’s survival: Caprica Six shields him when the blast blows in the windows. As Moore described the shot, she “kind of grabs him and shields him with her body.” The scene is not evidence that Baltar is a Cylon. Read Moore’s explanation in the Los Angeles Times.

Which version of Battlestar Galactica does this answer cover?
This answer concerns the 2004 reimagined television series and its completed story, not the original 1978 series. Within the reimagined series, the answer to whether Baltar is revealed as a Cylon is no; what remains open is how viewers interpret the spiritual forces and visions surrounding the ending.
