The real case and the film diverge substantially. The American Film Institute’s catalog notes that the couple remained at Fugate’s Lincoln home for about a week, keeping visitors away by saying the family had the flu. Badlands, by contrast, sends its fugitives to a forest refuge. Kit and Holly’s flight becomes both a crime story and an oblique teenage romance. Holly narrates with a dreamy, matter-of-fact voice that rarely seems to register the full weight of the violence around her. That gap between her perspective and what the viewer sees is central to the film’s unease.
Why does Badlands feel so eerie?
Malick sets violence against natural beauty and uses voice-over in an impressionistic way, rather than treating the story as a conventional procedural. Landscapes can feel tranquil even as the characters’ actions become increasingly brutal. Holly’s narration lends the events a fairy-tale distance, but it does not erase their consequences; instead, the mismatch makes them more unsettling.
