The risks parents need to distinguish are inappropriate or sexualized material inside user-created experiences and predatory conduct such as grooming or attempts to move a child’s contact off-platform. Roblox describes moderation, age checks, reporting and parental controls; it also acknowledges that harmful material can still appear and that users may evade or be misclassified by safeguards.
What does “sex games” mean on Roblox?
Roblox is a platform where users create and play experiences. In this context, “sex games” is a broad, informal label for sexualized or otherwise inappropriate content or conduct in user-created experiences. It should not be taken to mean that such material is permitted by Roblox or that every experience is sexualized.
Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, announced a policy clarification on Aug. 15, 2025: the prohibition on romantic and sexual content explicitly covers content, settings or behavior that implies sexual activity. The announcement also described measures aimed at unrated experiences, violative scenes in otherwise compliant experiences, and some social hangouts. These are company policy and product descriptions, not proof that every violation is detected or removed.
Sexualized content and predatory contact are different risks
An inappropriate scene or setting in an experience is a content-moderation concern. Grooming, sexual conversation, requests for images or personal information, pressure to keep secrets, and attempts to move contact to another service are conduct and child-safety concerns. The two can overlap, but they are not the same problem and require different responses: report the experience or content when that is the issue, and report the user and preserve relevant information when someone is targeting a child.

What safeguards does Roblox describe—and what do they establish?
Roblox’s official “Child Safety on Roblox” resource says the company uses human review and AI-powered tools to moderate content, works to detect attempts to move children off-platform, applies age gates to some experiences, and prohibits sexual conversation, grooming, and sharing or requesting child sexual exploitation material. Roblox also states: “Please note that we cannot prevent all problematic content from appearing on Roblox, and we encourage parents to talk to their kids about internet safety and to understand what their kids are doing online.”
In its 2025 Form 10-K, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 2026, Roblox describes automated and human review of content and communications, moderation of uploaded media, and age-check systems. The filing says mandatory age checks were implemented beginning in January 2026 in regions where chat is enabled. Roblox says the design is intended to limit chat to users in similar age groups or to Trusted Connections. The same filing acknowledges risks from evasion, misrepresentation and inaccurate age classifications, which may expose users to inappropriate content or restricted features.
These disclosures describe policies and processes; they are not an independent audit of how well those processes work. A rule, detector or reporting channel is not a guarantee that a harmful experience or interaction will be prevented.

What Roblox announced for experiences
In its Aug. 15, 2025 policy announcement, Roblox said it planned to restrict unrated experiences to developers and people working on them until developers completed a Maturity & Compliance Questionnaire and obtained a maturity label. It also described technology intended to detect violative scenes in otherwise compliant experiences and automatically take down servers with a high volume of violative behavior.

The announcement further said certain social hangouts involving private spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms, or adult-oriented settings such as bars and clubs, would be limited to users who were ID-verified and at least 17. These details reflect Roblox’s announcement. The announcement alone does not establish the current status or regional availability of each measure.
What Roblox reports about child sexual exploitation material
Roblox’s Q1–Q2 2025 California AB 587 Transparency Report, filed with the California Office of the Attorney General, describes text filters and other automated measures, AI tools applied to published or updated experiences, image review, and scanning of communications. The report says images and videos are evaluated using PhotoDNA and Google’s Content Safety API; flags are sent to trained agents for verification, and confirmed material is reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K also describes review and reporting processes and cooperation with investigations. It acknowledges that sexual content involving children has been uploaded despite dedicated technology and trained human moderators. These are Roblox’s own disclosures, including a report filed with California—not an independent finding that the controls prevent or catch every incident.
What is known about the scale of the problem?
The sources covered here do not establish a comparable, independently verified rate for child exploitation or sexualized experiences on Roblox. They do not support a claim that a particular percentage of users encounter such material, or a general statement about how often grooming occurs. The California transparency report and Roblox’s SEC filing describe company processes and acknowledged risks, but they do not provide a basis here for a prevalence estimate.

Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K also acknowledges lawsuits alleging that offenders used the platform to identify and communicate with children and entice them into off-platform interactions. Those are allegations in litigation, not adjudicated findings. Keeping the distinction clear matters: an allegation is not a court finding, and the existence of reported incidents does not by itself establish how common they are.

Does Roblox have parental controls?
Yes. Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K says parents and caregivers can limit features such as chat, control screen time and spending, view a child’s friends list, and restrict experiences by content maturity labels. Users can also report activity and block other users. The names and location of settings can change, so use Roblox’s current official support instructions to configure them rather than relying on a navigation path that may no longer match the app.
Controls can reduce exposure and give caregivers more visibility, but they cannot substitute for a child telling a trusted adult when someone behaves in a worrying way. A useful family rule is that a child can show an adult an uncomfortable interaction without being blamed or immediately losing access to the game.
How do I keep my child safe on Roblox?
- Set controls together. Review the current parental controls for chat, screen time, spending, friends and experience maturity. Choose settings that match the child’s age and your family’s expectations, and check them again when Roblox changes its features.
- Talk about the difference between a game and a relationship. Explain that someone met in a game is still an online contact, even if they seem friendly or claim to be a child. A child should not share personal information or images, agree to secrecy, or move a conversation to another service because someone asks.
- Make reporting feel safe. Tell your child to come to you if an experience or person makes them uncomfortable. Ask calmly what they saw, who they interacted with, and whether anyone requested personal information, images, secrecy or off-platform contact.
- Use Roblox’s report and block tools. Report the relevant user, activity or content through Roblox’s current in-platform tools, and block the account if needed. If you can do so safely, retain relevant account details and messages for a report; do not investigate, contact or confront a suspected offender yourself.
- Escalate immediate danger or suspected crime. Contact appropriate local authorities if there is an immediate safety concern or reason to suspect a crime. Use emergency services where necessary.
How do I report grooming on Roblox?
Use Roblox’s current in-platform reporting tools to report the account and the relevant messages or activity, then block the user. If a child has been asked to move to another service, include that context when speaking with Roblox or authorities; do not ask the child to continue the conversation to gather evidence. Preserve what is already available without forwarding or reposting sexual images. For immediate danger or suspected criminal conduct, contact appropriate local authorities.

What did the reported Nevada agreement require?
The Associated Press reported on April 15, 2026, that Roblox agreed to a Nevada youth-protection settlement in lieu of litigation. AP described provisions including age estimation; limits on chats between adults and users under 16 except trusted friends; expanded parental oversight; and accounts for children under 16 that block adult-rated content and offer games vetted for suitability. AP also reported a law-enforcement liaison and funding for online-safety awareness.
Those details are AP’s account of the agreement. The report does not establish that every provision was already fully implemented when the story appeared, so they should not be treated as a description of current settings without further confirmation.
