Cid Kagenou acts ordinary in public because he wants to become something extraordinary in secret: a hidden mastermind who shapes events from behind the scenes. His “mundane man” performance is not a retreat from that fantasy. It is one of the roles he believes a shadowy power should play.
Why does Cid act like a background character?
Cid’s ambition is not to be a conventional hero at the center of the story, or even its final villain. Yen Press’s synopsis for The Eminence in Shadow, Vol. 1 (light novel) describes his preference for lying low as a minor character until the moment he can reveal himself as a mastermind—or at least appear to be one.
That makes his ordinary public image part of the fantasy. Cid wants to occupy a low-status role convincingly, then step out of it at a dramatic moment. The official anime premise frames the same aspiration as operating behind the scenes, intervening in a story, and displaying power (official anime site).
What makes the performance ironic?
Cid’s private role-playing collides with events he does not understand as well as he thinks he does. The publisher’s synopsis says he invents a cult-related plot as a joke, only for the supposed adversaries to turn out to be real. His imagined scenario and the consequences around him therefore diverge: what he treats as an elaborate performance is entangled with a genuine conflict.

#1 Best Overall
That gap is the premise’s comic engine. Cid thinks in terms of staging the perfect hidden-mastermind reveal; the world around him gives his inventions real stakes. His apparent ordinariness does not mean he has given up his ambition—it is how he imagines the role should work.
What does “mundane man” mean here?
“Mundane man” is a useful shorthand for the contrast between Cid’s unremarkable public presentation and his grand private ambition. The official anime framing and Yen Press synopsis support that broad contrast, but they do not establish the specific details of a tournament disguise or the exact mechanics of a persona under that name. Those scene-level particulars should be checked against the relevant episode or novel rather than inferred from the general premise.

Where can you follow Cid’s story?
The official anime site provides character and story sections for the animated version. Readers who prefer the source novel can begin with Yen Press’s English-language listing for The Eminence in Shadow, Vol. 1 (light novel), which is presented as the first volume of the series—not as a dedicated guide to a “Mundane Mann” arc. Choose based on whether you want the anime’s visual presentation or the novel’s prose; the available official descriptions do not establish one format as universally better.
