Megan Boone’s run as FBI profiler Elizabeth “Liz” Keen ended with The Blacklist season 8 finale, “Konets.” Liz agrees to kill Raymond “Red” Reddington but cannot pull the trigger; Vandyke shoots her from behind, and she dies. Boone’s departure was reported as a mutual decision with the producers, planned before the show’s season 9 renewal. The finale strongly suggests a connection between Red and Liz’s mother, Katarina Rostova, but never states Red’s identity outright.
What happens to Liz in “Konets”?
Konets—season 8, episode 22—centers on a final bargain between Red and Liz. Red tells Liz that the letter left by her mother will explain his identity and why he entered Liz’s life. He asks Liz to kill him first, arguing that taking over his criminal empire could protect her from enemies who might pursue Townsend’s power or learn Red’s identity. NBC’s episode listing describes Red making a disturbing request in exchange for the truth about his identity: NBC’s “Konets” episode page.

Liz agrees in principle, but when she has the chance, she cannot shoot Red. Vandyke shoots her from behind. Red kills Vandyke, returns to Liz, and she dies. Red and Dembe leave before the task force arrives.
Did “Konets” reveal who Red really is?
The finale points toward a Red–Katarina connection through Liz’s memories of both figures and Red’s statement that he knew Katarina better than anyone. That is a strong implication, not an explicit confirmation: the episode never says that Red is Katarina. TVLine’s contemporaneous finale coverage likewise notes that the show does not announce Red’s identity: TVLine’s “Konets” recap.

Why did Megan Boone leave The Blacklist?
TheWrap reported on June 15, 2021, that Boone was leaving after eight seasons, describing the departure as a mutual decision between Boone and the producers. The report said the exit had been in the works before the season 9 renewal, giving the writers time to shape Liz’s ending: TheWrap’s report on Boone’s exit.
That public reporting does not establish a detailed personal reason from Boone. Her farewell focused on the experience of playing Liz and gratitude to the people involved, rather than giving a specific explanation for leaving.
What Boone said about playing Liz
In a farewell post published as her final episode aired, Boone wrote, “This experience, for me, has been an entire life inside of my own life.” She added that the eight years playing Liz had helped her “better define the world and myself, as she set out to do the same,” and thanked cast members, crew, guest performers, and viewers. TVLine reported on the farewell: TVLine’s report on Boone’s message.
In a June 22, 2021 interview with TV Insider, Boone described her view of Liz as inherently good, with a “dark side” shaped by actions she believed were necessary for national security and to get her daughter out of a violent life. That was Boone’s interpretation of her character, not confirmation of the writers’ intended explanation: TV Insider’s interview with Boone.
When was Boone’s final episode?
“Konets” was Boone’s final episode as a series regular after eight seasons. NBC’s episode page displays June 25, 2021, while contemporaneous U.S. coverage, including TVLine’s finale report, places the episode’s airing on June 23. The dates differ across those sources; the season and episode designation is consistent.
TheWrap reported on June 24, 2021, that Boone and her newly launched production company, Weird Sister, had signed a first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television. Sony Pictures Television president Jeff Frost said, “Megan was instrumental in the success of Blacklist and we are elated she will continue to be an integral member of the Sony family.” TheWrap’s report on Boone’s departure and Sony deal.
