Cynthia is married to Warren (Judd Hirsch), who is much older and beginning to experience early dementia. Stan, meanwhile, is trying to reconnect with his daughter Sammi (Brittany O’Grady), a singer-songwriter, after being absent for much of her childhood. The story brings their personal struggles into the developing relationship between Stan and Cynthia. The Moveable Fest interview with Weithorn identifies the film as his second feature and discusses its 2025 Tribeca premiere.
Who made the film, and what inspired it?
Weithorn wrote and directed the film. He has said that he drew on observing a couple in which the older partner was beginning to decline, as well as his longstanding interest in relationships between people from different walks of life. “I’ve always loved unlikely relationships that form,” he told The Moveable Fest in an interview published June 15, 2025.

How do texting and music contribute to the story?
Late-night messages
Stan and Cynthia’s late-night texting gives them space to build a conversational connection. Weithorn described the sequence as aiming for “a conversation that happens to be on text as opposed to texting being the point.” The scene shifts from on-screen messages to voiceover, avoiding a prolonged stretch in which viewers would have to read text.
Songs performed and used in the film
Sammi performs “She Waits,” a song by Rob Benedict’s band Louden Swain. The film also uses “Believe,” by Raelee Nikole. Weithorn has said the music was selected for its emotional and thematic effect. The director also explained that the club sequence featuring O’Grady singing was moved earlier from the end credits so audiences would see it.

Is The Best You Can a Bill Withers song?
There is also a distinct song called “The Best You Can,” credited to Bill Withers as performer and composer, with B. Blackmon as co-composer. Shazam lists it on Withers’s album Making Music. That song is not the 2025 film. The listing establishes the album association, but not a current physical edition or product listing. See the Shazam track listing.

The available film coverage establishes a 2025 Tribeca screening, but does not confirm a current streaming service, home-video format, or physical release.
