Games Workshop says initial outlines are complete and Mike Flanagan is expected to move on to scripting. Henry Cavill and Vertigo remain involved. A separate animated series about the Deathwatch is also being developed for Amazon.
What is happening with Amazon’s live-action Warhammer 40,000 project?
Games Workshop’s annual report for the 52 weeks ended 31 May 2026 says the project continues under contract with Amazon. The company reported that initial outlines had been completed and that Mike Flanagan should soon move on to the script. It also said United Artists had joined the project, while Vertigo and Henry Cavill remained involved. Games Workshop did not disclose the story, characters, cast beyond the named involvement, episode count, budget or filming dates.
In the report, Games Workshop chief executive Kevin Rountree described the partnership as long-term: “This is a long-term partnership with Amazon – and these adaptations will take years to bring successfully to market.” The same report says the project continues in line with the contractual agreement. These are company updates, not a production schedule or a promised release window. Games Workshop’s 2026 annual report
When will the Warhammer 40,000 show be released?
No release date has been publicly confirmed in the available Games Workshop or trade reporting. Games Workshop’s 10 December 2024 announcement said production could take a number of years; its 2026 report still described a project in development, with scripting expected next. That points to an open-ended wait, not an official deadline or evidence that the project is about to be cancelled. Games Workshop’s 10 December 2024 agreement announcement

The sources also do not establish when filming will begin, which Amazon service or territories will carry the show, or whether a particular subscription will be required. Amazon is the adaptation partner; that does not mean either project is currently available to stream.
Is Henry Cavill still involved?
Yes. Games Workshop’s 2026 annual report says Cavill remains involved in the live-action project, alongside Vertigo. It does not specify his character or describe his precise role in that project. Variety separately reported that Cavill will executive produce the animated Deathwatch series; that is a distinct attachment and should not be mistaken for confirmation of a character or acting role in either project. Is the Deathwatch animated series the same show?
No. The animated Deathwatch project is a separate series in development, not a newly announced format or storyline for the live-action adaptation. Games Workshop says work has begun on a full animated series for Amazon, written by John Orloff and animated by Blur. Variety’s 4 August 2026 report identifies Dave Wilson as co-creator and director and Cavill as an executive producer. Neither project has a confirmed release date in the cited sources.

How the Amazon agreement developed
- 16 December 2022: Amazon announced it had secured global Warhammer 40,000 rights.
- 18 December 2023: Games Workshop said it had entered an agreement with Amazon to develop the setting for film and television, with related merchandising rights, subject to agreement on creative guidelines.
- 10 December 2024: Games Workshop announced that the creative guidelines had been agreed and a final agreement reached. The deal covers Warhammer 40,000 film and television adaptations and associated merchandising rights. It also gives Amazon an option to license equivalent Warhammer Fantasy rights after an initial Warhammer 40,000 production.
- 2026 annual report: Games Workshop said the live-action project remained under contract, with outlines complete and scripting expected next, and disclosed the separate Deathwatch animated series.
- 4 August 2026: Variety reported on the animated series and its creative team.
Games Workshop says contractual limits prevent it from sharing some project details and commercial terms. The agreement establishes adaptation rights; it does not, by itself, establish a release plan or product launch schedule.

The announced projects have not yet been tied to a specific book, game campaign or storyline. If you want to explore the setting now, Games Workshop describes Warhammer as a hobby of collecting, building, painting, playing and reading. Its 2026 report says a new Warhammer 40,000 edition launched in June 2026, alongside ongoing miniature releases. Starter sets, miniatures and printed books are ways into the tabletop setting, but the available announcements do not identify any particular book or product as the adaptation’s source.
