The Complete Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s graphic memoir of growing up amid Iran’s Islamic Revolution, coming of age in Vienna, returning to Iran, and ultimately living in self-imposed exile. Its comic-strip images and personal perspective make political upheaval part of a family and coming-of-age story—not a detached survey of Iranian history.
What is The Complete Persepolis about?
Penguin Random House describes the memoir as a journey from Satrapi’s childhood in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution through adolescence in Vienna, her return to Iran, and eventual self-imposed exile. The book also explores the divide between public life and private life. Political change shapes the events, but the story is told through Satrapi’s experiences and relationships.
The word “Complete” matters: this edition brings together a broader span of Satrapi’s life than the publisher’s separate listing titled Persepolis, which describes the childhood story of growing up in Iran during the revolution. The complete book includes the Vienna years, return, and exile as well. Penguin Random House’s complete-edition listing is the reference for that scope.
Why does the graphic-memoir form matter?
Satrapi uses comic-strip imagery to tell a personal story against a backdrop of political upheaval. Rather than presenting a broad historical account, the memoir brings the reader close to how public events and expectations shape family life, identity, and growing up. Its personal point of view can complement historical study, but it should not be mistaken for a comprehensive history of Iran.

Penguin Random House’s reader guide asks, “How does Satrapi’s memoir reframe the study of history?” One way to approach that question is to notice how the book makes political abstractions legible through individual lives and hopes. The guide attributes this statement to Satrapi in an Associated Press interview: “The only thing I hope is that people will read my book and see that this abstract thing, this Axis of Evil, is made up of individuals with lives and hopes.”
What role does Vienna play?
Vienna is a central part of the complete memoir, not an aside. Satrapi’s adolescence there is framed by separation from her family and the difficulties of growing up away from home. This section widens the story beyond childhood in Tehran and gives the book’s account of identity and belonging another setting.

Which edition is the complete book?
The publisher’s currently listed 20th-anniversary complete edition is The Complete Persepolis: 20th Anniversary Edition, a hardcover with ISBN 9780593701058. Penguin Random House says it includes a new introduction by Satrapi examining Iran’s political landscape in the context of global politics. Check the title, format, and ISBN when identifying or ordering an edition; a listing simply titled Persepolis may refer to the separate, shorter book.
