The restaurant’s short run is documented; the reason it closed is not. Its launch was closely tied to WCW’s debut of Monday Nitro, but the available accounts do not establish that poor food, weak demand, or any particular business decision caused its failure.
What Pastamania was
Pastamania was a quick-service pasta restaurant at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. Its pitch combined familiar pasta dishes with Hulk Hogan branding: retrospective accounts describe traditional pasta alongside Hulk-shaped noodles and Hogan-themed menu names.
Wrestling Inc. reports items called “Hulk’s Power Pasta” and “Hulkaroni and Cheese.” VICE describes traditional and Hulk-shaped noodles and reproduces a historical menu image. These accounts offer a glimpse of the concept, not a complete, verified menu. The Tenant Encyclopedia, a fan-maintained archive, describes a grand-opening flyer advertising daily specials and mix-and-match pasta platters; its own listing cautions that it may be inaccurate. VICE’s retrospective and The Tenant Encyclopedia listing preserve some of the surviving menu evidence.
How the restaurant’s launch connected to WCW
Pastamania opened over Labor Day weekend in 1995. Its debut coincided with a major wrestling promotion at the mall: WCW’s Monday Nitro premiered there on September 4, 1995. The Mall of America’s official timeline records that the first broadcast took place in the Rotunda, with Hogan facing Big Bubba Rogers in the main event. The mall’s timeline establishes the broadcast date and venue.

Retrospective accounts describe WCW footage and promotion for Pastamania around the launch. Retroist recalls Hogan, Eric Bischoff, Randy Savage, and Jimmy Hart promoting the restaurant in opening footage; Wrestling Inc. says Pastamania was highlighted on the show the next day. These reports show how the restaurant was woven into WCW’s mall event, but they do not document its day-to-day business performance. Retroist’s account and Wrestling Inc.’s retrospective provide that promotional context.
When Pastamania closed
Retrospective coverage puts the restaurant’s life at less than a year. Retroist describes a run of only a few months, while Wrestling Inc. also says it closed within a year. The Tenant Encyclopedia lists 1995 as both its opening and closing year, but that fan-maintained record is not definitive. The exact closing date is not established by these accounts.

Why did Pastamania fail?
The clear answer is that the reason has not been established. Wrestling Inc. says no clear-cut explanation for the closure is known. Its suggestion that customers may not have been interested is speculation, not documented testimony or business data.
The available accounts do not provide sales figures, customer counts, operating costs, rent information, or firsthand testimony from Hogan or a business partner explaining the decision to close. The contrast is therefore between a highly visible promotional launch and a short-lived restaurant—not between proven causes. It is fair to say Pastamania did not last; it is not supported to say its food was bad, that Hogan neglected the business, or that the mall failed to attract customers.
