The Cantareel is a hand-cranked attachment that makes a guitar produce sustained, bowed-style tones. “Hurdy-guitar turned inside out” is a useful sound-and-mechanism comparison, not a literal description: the Cantareel remains a guitar attachment, and its loops—not its wheel—rub the strings.
What is the Cantareel?
Made by Logic Wave, the Cantareel is a physical attachment for an acoustic or classical guitar. Its inventor, Keizo Ishibashi, is identified in the maker’s Cantareel Adventure Guide as having created it in 2025. It mounts to the guitar without modifying the instrument, though fit depends on the guitar and its string height.
The “hurdy-guitar” label captures the idea of sustaining string tones with a crank. It does not mean the Cantareel is a hurdy-gurdy: the guitar supplies the instrument and strings, while the attachment supplies a loop-driven mechanism.
How does it turn a guitar into a hurdy-gurdy-like instrument?
Turning the handle rotates a wheel that drives two loops against the guitar’s strings. The loops create continuous friction, producing a sustained, bowed-style sound. In a traditional hurdy-gurdy, the wheel itself directly rubs the strings; in the Cantareel, the wheel sits outside the soundbox and drives loops that make contact. The maker explains the operating principle in its guide; Hackaday’s July 12, 2025 coverage describes the arrangement and notes that strings touched by the loops continue to sound as drones.

That difference shapes the comparison. The Cantareel is an attachment rather than a standalone instrument, and the loop-contacted strings sustain while the mechanism turns. It can evoke a hurdy-gurdy’s continuous sound, but the two instruments do not share an identical mechanism, playing technique, sound, or range of capabilities.
Will it fit my acoustic guitar?
Logic Wave says the attachment works with common acoustic and classical guitars and does not require guitar modification. Its product listing makes string height at the mounting location the key check:
- Below 9 mm: the maker warns that smooth operation may not be possible.
- 15 mm or higher: the maker says the attachment should be raised using the height-adjustment plate.
These are the product page’s setup cautions, not independent compatibility-test results. Check the height where the device will sit and consult the maker’s guidance if your guitar falls outside the stated range or has an unusual body or string arrangement.
Which strings does it use?
The loops act on the four inner strings—strings two through five—for the loop-bowed sound. The two outer strings can serve as resonant strings and may also be plucked. Because the contacted strings keep rubbing while the wheel turns, they can function as drones rather than behaving like individually bowed notes on a conventional violin.

What tuning and accessories do I need?
The maker presents DADA and EBEB as example tunings suited to a broad range of styles. It also lists standard guitar tuning and GCEA as options. These are suggestions, not mandatory tunings; choose according to the sound you want and follow the guide’s setup instructions.
Rosin is not included, according to the official listing. Logic Wave lists two loops, two sound-softening sheets, a height-adjustment plate, and a cloth among the package contents. The listing does not specify a particular rosin brand or type.
