Le Bureau des légendes, known internationally as The Bureau, is a French espionage drama created by Éric Rochant for CANAL+. Its most distinctive source of tension is the DGSE unit at its center: the Bureau trains and manages clandestine agents operating abroad under assumed identities, making institutional decisions and the strain of maintaining a cover as important as field missions. The comparison with Homeland is useful shorthand, but this is its own story, not a remake.
What is The Bureau about?
The series is set within the DGSE, France’s external intelligence service. Its Bureau trains and remotely directs clandestine agents abroad, including agents tasked with identifying potential intelligence sources. The premise creates two connected arenas: operations in the field and the office decisions that shape, monitor and sometimes endanger those operations. CANAL+ describes the series and its setting on its official series page.
That institutional focus gives the show a particular kind of suspense. A cover identity is not merely a disguise for a mission; it is a life an agent must sustain while the Bureau weighs risk, intelligence value and the consequences of intervention. The pressure can come from what an agent does abroad, but also from what colleagues decide at a distance.
Is it really France’s answer to Homeland?
It is fair to compare the two as espionage dramas concerned with intelligence work and personal cost, but “France’s answer” is a critical framing, not an official label or a claim that the shows are interchangeable. In coverage of its 2020 season slate, Le Monde called The Bureau “la contrepartie française de Homeland, mais en plus subtil” — “the French counterpart to Homeland, but more subtle.” That is one publication’s characterization, not a consensus verdict or an objective measure of tone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The more useful distinction is where the premise places its attention. The Bureau explicitly centers the DGSE unit responsible for clandestine agents, so the management of covers and the institution’s choices are built into its story engine. The comparison can help orient viewers, but it should not obscure the series’ specifically French intelligence setting.

How does it relate to The Agency?
The Agency, also referred to as The Department, is an adaptation based on the French series, not a continuation of it. Paramount’s announcement presents the U.S. production as an adaptation and invokes Homeland in describing its lineage; that marketing comparison does not make the original a remake of Homeland. The two are separate productions, and Le Bureau des légendes remains grounded in the DGSE and its French setting. See the Paramount announcement.
How was the series received?
Le Monde reported in 2019 that the series ranked third among 30 non-American series in The New York Times’ list of the decade’s best international shows. That is a published ranking placement, not audience data or a statistical measure of quality. It helps explain the show’s international profile, but does not replace a viewer’s judgment of its pacing or approach to espionage.

Can you buy the complete series on DVD?
A complete five-season DVD release is documented, but catalogues describe different editions. The Bibliothèque nationale de France records a 2020 StudioCanal commercial release as a 20-disc Zone 2 set; AlloCiné lists a seasons 1–5 box dated 8 June 2020 as a 15-disc PAL edition. These should not be treated as one universal disc count. Check the specific edition’s region, language and compatibility details before buying, particularly if your DVD player is not compatible with Zone 2.
