WWE used the date to connect the film’s release campaign to Kane’s fictional past, then added a masked impostor for a brief rivalry.
Why May 19 mattered
The date joined a real-world film promotion to a fictional wrestling backstory. WWE’s May 19, 2006 recap explicitly noted that the date coincided with the release of See No Evil, which starred Kane, while suggesting it also held an unknown personal significance for his character. WWE later supplied that in-story explanation in a retrospective.
| Context | What May 19 meant |
|---|---|
| Real world | The release date of See No Evil, starring Kane. WWE’s May 19, 2006 recap tied the date to the film. |
| WWE storyline | The date Kane said his and The Undertaker’s families died in a funeral-home fire. WWE’s retrospective on Kane describes this as the character’s explanation. |
What happened when someone said the date?
For several weeks on Raw, Kane reacted violently whenever May 19 was mentioned. In the May 19 SmackDown segment, Rey Mysterio answers JBL by saying the date. Kane’s music plays; he hears voices, falls into a trance and attacks Mysterio. When JBL repeats the date, Kane turns on him too. WWE’s contemporaneous recap records the episode and the film connection.
What was the explanation in the storyline?
WWE’s later account says Kane eventually explained that May 19 was the day a fire at a funeral home killed both his family and The Undertaker’s. This is fictional character history, not a real event. In the angle, the date served as a trauma trigger: hearing it brought on voices and an uncontrolled, violent reaction.

Who was the fake Kane?
On the May 29 Raw, a masked figure in Kane’s ring attire and mask from Badd Blood 1997 appeared and attacked him. The appearance launched a short impostor rivalry. WWE’s retrospective says Kane eventually reclaimed his mask by force and sent the figure away, but it does not identify the performer behind the mask or give a confirmed behind-the-scenes reason for introducing the character.

Kane played Jacob Goodnight in See No Evil. WWE’s contemporaneous recap makes the release-date connection explicit, so the film’s timing explains why May 19 was central to the promotion. The character’s family-fire story explains Kane’s reaction within kayfabe. These are related parts of the same angle, but the film’s release date and the fictional tragedy are not the same event.

The listing titles establish that those videos were published, but do not themselves provide a transcript of what was said. Kane’s 2006 WWE interview about See No Evil is promotional discussion of the film, not a documented explanation of the impostor’s booking.
