Recent fan polls put RIIZE’s Shotaro and BTS’s Jimin at the top of different contests, but neither result is a technical verdict across all performers. The answer changes depending on whether “best” means precision, musicality, versatility, stage presence or popularity in a particular vote.
Why there is no single winner
K-pop has no authoritative all-time ranking that compares every individual dancer using one shared judging standard. Fan polls measure the preferences of eligible voters; awards recognize defined categories or performances; editorial features describe selected examples; and movement-analysis studies measure specific features of video. These forms of evidence answer different questions, so they cannot be combined into a definitive leaderboard.
The word “best” also depends on the role being considered. A group’s main dancer is a position within that group, not a title that establishes superiority over every other idol. Someone may stand out for exact execution, while another excels at interpreting music or commanding a stage.
What makes a K-pop dancer stand out?
A useful comparison separates individual qualities from the effect of a whole group. The criteria below are distinct, and deciding how much weight to give each is ultimately an editorial choice.

#1 Best Overall
- Control and precision: Clear shapes, balance, timing, smooth transitions and consistent execution of choreographic details.
- Musicality: How movement accents, sustains or plays against the rhythm and other sounds in a track.
- Style and versatility: Command of a movement vocabulary and the ability to adapt to choreographies with contrasting demands.
- Expression and performance: Whether movement communicates character and holds attention, rather than merely hitting counts.
- Adaptability and collaboration: The ability to adjust energy and timing alongside a partner or within a different concept.
- Group execution: Synchronization and formations matter to K-pop performances, but they are group-level evidence and cannot, on their own, establish an individual dancer’s rank.
Dance challenges can offer a glimpse of adaptability because performers meet another artist’s choreography or share a routine. But an individual clip is not a standardized assessment: it does not necessarily compare the same choreography, rehearsal conditions or performance context.

Shotaro: UPICK’s 2026 fan vote
Sports Kyunghyang reported that RIIZE’s Shotaro placed first in UPICK’s “Best Position Match-Dancer” vote, which ran from September 2 to 14, 2026. A preliminary vote on UPICK’s official X account selected 12 finalists for the final round. This establishes the winner of that platform’s fan vote; it is not a professional judging score or a ranking of every K-pop dancer by technical skill. Sports Kyunghyang’s report

Performers to consider across different strengths
The following names illustrate a range of styles and evidence, not a ranked shortlist. In a November 2024 feature on dance challenges, Soompi described particular qualities in selected clips. Lee Chae Yeon and Sung Han Bin also appeared in the feature’s dance-challenge examples. Their inclusion is evidence that the article discussed them, not a comparative verdict or rank.

Background can help explain why a performer has a particular movement vocabulary, but it does not decide who is best. A 2020 Soompi feature reported that WinWin trained in classical Chinese dance at Beijing Dance Academy, Mina studied ballet for 11 years, and Kai drew on ballet, hip-hop and contemporary dance. It also described Jimin’s background in ballet, modern and contemporary dance. These are publication-reported details about training, not substitutes for assessing current performances. A Digital Humanities Quarterly study used pose estimation to explore movement and pose similarity in dance-practice videos. Its initial dataset contained 20 videos—10 each from boy and girl groups—released from 2017 onward at the time of the study. The authors also discussed choreographic structures beyond simple synchronization, including simultaneous subgroup movements and cascading sequences. This work provides methodological context for analyzing choreography; it is not an individual-skill leaderboard. Digital Humanities Quarterly’s study

That distinction matters because visual similarity, timing or synchronization can be measured in a defined dataset, but those measures do not automatically capture musical interpretation, expression or performance impact. A study of selected videos should not be read as a ranking of all idols.
So, who should you call the best?
If you mean the winner of a specific recent fan vote, Shotaro won UPICK’s 2026 “Best Position Match-Dancer” contest, while Jimin topped King Choice’s 2026 male-idol poll. If you mean a universal technical winner, the available evidence does not establish one. A fair answer is to name the quality you value, then compare performers on that basis rather than treating separate polls, awards and editorial observations as if they measured the same thing.
