Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell belongs on a broader list for viewers who want a cyberpunk tactical lead, though official character descriptions emphasize her combat skills and command rather than a signature firearm. “Best” here means a strong fit for a particular kind of action story—not an objective ranking.
How to choose an anime gunfighter
These two characters offer different reasons to watch: one is introduced as a gunfighter, while the other is a cybernetic operative and tactical leader. Compare them by how central firearms are to their identity, their role in the story, and whether you want crime action or cyberpunk science fiction.
| Character | Firearms in the character concept | Story role and appeal | Best fit if you want |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revy, Black Lagoon | Central: the official profile identifies her as a Lagoon Company gunfighter known as “Two Hands,” referring to her two-pistol style. | An abrasive, high-intensity gunfighter in a crime-action setting. | A character whose action identity is directly tied to guns. |
| Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell | Not established as central by the cited official profiles; they emphasize her cybernetic combat abilities and cyberbrain skills. | A full-body cyborg who leads a tactical unit in a near-future setting. | Cyberpunk, tactical operations, and questions of identity. |
Revy: the direct gunfighter pick
The official Black Lagoon character profile identifies Revy as a Lagoon Company gunfighter and gives her the nickname “Two Hands” (二挺拳銃, literally “two pistols”). That makes her the most direct match here for viewers looking for a woman whose action identity centers on firearms. The same profile describes her as short-tempered and says she grew up in a slum and dislikes discussing her past.
As an editorial recommendation, choose Revy for an abrasive, high-intensity crime-action lead rather than a coolly detached tactical commander. The series’ official credits identify Black Lagoon as an original graphic novel by Rei Hiroe, published by Shogakukan; readers who want the story in manga form can look for Rei Hiroe’s Black Lagoon. The cited page does not establish a particular volume or current retailer availability.

Motoko Kusanagi: the cyberpunk tactical pick
The official Ghost in the Shell global site places the story in 2029 and describes a near-future information-intensive world. It identifies Motoko as a full-body cyborg with exceptional combat and cyberbrain skills who leads Public Security Section 9’s tactical “Shell Squad.” The official character page for the 2026 TV anime likewise describes her as a full-body cyborg with combat and cyberbrain skills.
Motoko earns a place on a wider list of armed anime heroines because she brings tactical action and cyberpunk themes, not because the cited descriptions identify a signature gun. If you watch the 2026 TV anime, its official character page names Maaya Sakamoto as Motoko’s voice actor for that series; this is not a claim about casting across every adaptation.

Which one should you watch?
- Choose Revy if you want a gunfighter first: her official profile directly identifies her as a gunfighter and ties her nickname to a two-pistol style.
- Choose Motoko if you want a cybernetic tactical lead in a near-future science-fiction story, with firearms only one possible part of a broader combat role.
The phrase “girls with guns” is also used for a broader category that includes titles such as Gunslinger Girl, Noir, Madlax, and Lycoris Recoil. That category label alone does not establish which individual characters best fit this shortlist, so these recommendations stay with the two characters whose official profiles support the comparison.
