The Penguin ends by making its central character’s rise feel like a moral collapse, not a victory lap. Oz kills Victor, Sofia returns to Arkham with a possible new family bond in view, and Batman never appears. That character-focused conclusion—alongside strong critical reception and major award recognition—makes a persuasive case for the series as standout comic-book television, though “one of the best ever” remains a judgment, not a measurable fact.
What happens in The Penguin finale?
The Penguin is an eight-episode DC Studios series starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb and continuing Matt Reeves’ The Batman crime saga. Lauren LeFranc developed the series. Its finale, “A Great or Little Thing,” aired November 10, 2024, according to DC’s series listing.

The finale closes Oz’s ascent by showing what he has sacrificed to become a Gotham power broker. It also leaves Sofia in Arkham, but a letter from Selina Kyle gives her ending a measure of possibility. Batman remains offscreen, keeping the resolution with the characters the series has followed.
Why does Oz kill Victor?
Victor tells Oz that he is like family. Oz kills him anyway. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc described the act as the moment Oz embraces the Penguin identity and becomes a monster. He has learned to treat personal ties as liabilities; killing someone who sees him as family makes that belief brutally concrete.
#1 Best Overall
The choice is the finale’s defining character consequence: Oz’s rise is not simply a change in status or a triumph over rivals. It is a deliberate rejection of intimacy in favor of power.
What does Sofia’s ending mean?
Sofia returns to Arkham, but Selina Kyle’s letter changes the meaning of that outcome. Selina is Sofia’s half-sister, a family connection outside the Falcone family that betrayed her. LeFranc told TheWrap that the letter lets Sofia discover she is “isn’t completely alone” and that “maybe there could be some hope for a future connection.”
Rank #2
The letter does not erase Sofia’s confinement or promise a reunion. Instead, it leaves her with the possibility of a bond she did not know existed—an understated counterpoint to Oz’s decision to destroy his own closest connection.
Does Batman appear in The Penguin finale?
No. LeFranc said the series kept Batman out to protect the stories and emotional arcs of its own characters. As she put it to TheWrap: “Gotham’s a big city, and the Batman cannot be everywhere at once.”

That absence helps the finale stand on its own rather than functioning as a cameo-driven bridge to another installment. Oz and Sofia’s endings remain the point of the episode.
Why the finale strengthens the case for The Penguin
It completes a character transformation
The series takes a traditionally cartoonish villain and reshapes him into a modern crime-drama figure. The finale gives that transformation a decisive cost: Oz gets closer to power by abandoning the possibility of treating another person as family.
Rank #4
- Blu-ray Movies, Blu-ray TV Shows
It gives the season consequential closure
The Ringer argues that the finale ties up most of the season’s arcs and makes the story feel final, while calling the series one of the best live-action Gotham stories. That is a critic’s assessment, not an objective ranking of comic-book television. Still, the sense of closure matters: the episode resolves the season’s central trajectories instead of relying on a last-minute franchise tease.
It keeps its focus independent of a major cameo
Batman’s absence is not a gap the episode needs to repair. It reinforces the show’s choice to treat Gotham as a city with stories beyond its most famous hero, and lets the finale’s emotional weight rest on Oz and Sofia.

It earned strong, but not unanimous, reception
Rotten Tomatoes showed a 95% Tomatometer from 212 reviews and an 85% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 ratings when accessed in 2026. These are changing platform aggregates, not a definitive measure of quality. The page includes praise for the show as a standalone story as well as a negative review describing it as mechanical and recycled. The figures support a broad positive reception, while the disagreement is a reminder that the response is not unanimous.
Its performances received Academy recognition
The Television Academy records Cristin Milioti as the 2025 winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Colin Farrell as a nominee in the lead actor category. That recognition supports the case for the show’s performances and craft; it cannot establish an all-time ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is The Penguin one of the best comic-book shows ever?
There is no factual all-time ranking established by these measures. The strongest case is an argued one: The Penguin delivers a consequential transformation for its lead, resolves most of its season’s major arcs, stands apart from a Batman cameo, and drew substantial critical and audience approval alongside Academy recognition.
Those are meaningful reasons to call it one of the best comic-book shows of its era—or a standout entry in live-action Gotham storytelling. A definitive comparison with every comic-book series would require consistent criteria and head-to-head evidence that the available sources do not provide.
