Its narrative may have the momentum of a thriller, but its subject is racist and antisemitic ideology, murder, robbery, counterfeiting and political violence.
What is The Order about?
Flynn and Gerhardt recount the rise and crimes of an extremist group led by Robert Jay Mathews, set against the wider white-supremacist underground. The book follows the group’s effort to advance its vision of an Aryan homeland through crime and violence, as well as the law-enforcement investigation connected to the assassination of radio host Alan Berg. The publisher presents it as an investigative true-crime account of white-supremacist militias and domestic terror groups, not as fiction. Simon & Schuster’s listing describes the book’s subject and identifies its authors as journalists.
The material is disturbing. The book’s value for documentary and true-crime readers lies in examining how extremist beliefs and a network of adherents intersected with criminal acts and the investigation—not in treating the perpetrators as antiheroes.
Is The Order the same book as The Silent Brotherhood?
Yes. Simon & Schuster says The Order was originally published as The Silent Brotherhood. The current edition is a 2024 media tie-in associated with the film; the title and packaging changed, but the available publisher information does not establish whether the text was revised. Readers should not assume it is a newly written book or that the 1989 reviews assess the 2024 edition’s packaging or any possible textual changes.

Flynn and Gerhardt were Denver journalists. The publisher identifies Flynn as an award-winning retired journalist and Gerhardt as a longtime crime reporter. A Wired retrospective reports that the book grew from their reporting, including interviews with group members during the subsequent trials, and that it returned to print under the new title after three decades out of print.
How does the reporting work as a narrative?
The book’s central challenge is to make a complex criminal investigation and extremist milieu legible without confusing narrative momentum with endorsement. Flynn and Gerhardt’s reporting roots the account in real events and people. Wired quotes Flynn describing the authors’ aim: “We didn’t write the book for the details. We wrote it to expose the banality of evil, so readers could understand where these folks come from and how endemic it is in American society.” That is Flynn’s stated purpose, not proof of how every reader will respond.

For readers, the most useful questions are whether the account connects ideology to specific crimes, gives the investigation and prosecutions enough clarity, and uses detail to illuminate rather than glamorize the perpetrators. The subject’s grimness is integral to the book; it is not simply a suspense premise detached from real harm.
What did reviewers say—and how current is that reception?
The available independent reviews are from 1989 and evaluate the book under its former title, The Silent Brotherhood. Kirkus called it a “Meticulously researched account, told in a novelistic manner” in its 1989 review. The Los Angeles Times described it as “a page-turner of a story about the police work that brought Mathews’ storm troopers to justice” in its 1989 review. “Storm troopers” is the newspaper’s dated phrasing, not a neutral description to adopt.
Rank #3
These reviews document the book’s original critical reception and praise its research and narrative drive. They do not establish a current critical consensus or evaluate the 2024 edition specifically.
Which edition and format should you choose?
The publisher lists paperback, ebook and unabridged audio download editions. Its paperback record gives a December 3, 2024 publication date, 448 pages and ISBN 9781668092132. The listed price is $19.99, but Simon & Schuster notes that retailer prices may vary; check current price and availability with the seller.
Rank #4
The paperback offers a physical copy and a clear edition identifier. Ebook and audio formats are available if you prefer digital reading or listening; the publisher identifies the audio as unabridged. The older reviews apply to the original-title book, so use them as historical context rather than a verdict on format or 2024 packaging.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is likely to find it worthwhile?
The Order is best suited to readers interested in investigative journalism, the history of domestic extremism and the reporting behind a major criminal case. Its reported foundation and narrative approach may appeal to true-crime readers, but the violence and racist, antisemitic ideology make it a difficult choice for anyone seeking a light or purely escapist thriller. It is nonfiction whose suspense comes from real events, not invented plot twists.
