The Most Famous Hollywood Socialites—and What Made Them Famous

Eve Babitz is a distinctly Los Angeles example; Babe Paley, Slim Keith, and C.Z. Guest were New York society figures with different Hollywood and cultural connections.

There is no authoritative ranking of Hollywood socialites. In the clearest Los Angeles example, Eve Babitz became known as a writer and artist moving among the city’s artists, writers, and musicians. Other frequently discussed names—Babe Paley, Slim Keith, and C.Z. Guest—belonged primarily to New York society, though they had distinct links to Hollywood, fashion, or the arts. The distinction matters: “socialite” describes a public role, not one job or a consistent category.

Who counts as a Hollywood socialite?

For this article, the term covers people with documented prominence in Los Angeles or Hollywood’s entertainment, arts, and celebrity circles. It can describe visibility through society coverage, magazine work, artistic activity, entertainment-industry relationships, or hosting. It does not, by itself, establish that someone worked in film or lived in Los Angeles.

That is why these names should not be treated as a ranked list. The available accounts do not provide a comparable measure of fame. A more useful way to understand them is to ask where each person’s social world was centered, what brought her public attention, and what legacy remains beyond her social connections.

Los Angeles and Hollywood’s cultural scene

Eve Babitz

Eve Babitz is the most clearly Los Angeles-centered figure in this selection. The Huntington describes her as born and raised in Los Angeles and embedded in a world of artists, writers, and musicians. She made art as well as writing; her first book, Eve’s Hollywood, appeared in 1974. Her public identity therefore reaches beyond the familiar image of a party fixture: she documented and participated in the city’s creative culture. The Huntington’s account of Babitz offers further context.

Babitz reflected on the social power of beauty in her own life: “In most high schools, you learn social things along with the rest of it. In mine, I learned irrevocably that beauty is power and the usual bastions of power are powerless when confronted by beauty.” This is her personal observation, not a universal definition of social status.

New York society figures with Hollywood connections

Babe Paley, Slim Keith, and C.Z. Guest are closely associated with Truman Capote’s New York social circle, often called the Swans. Their Hollywood relevance differs from Babitz’s Los Angeles-centered story, and none should be described simply as a Hollywood-based socialite. TIME’s account of Capote and the Swans distinguishes their backgrounds and public lives.

Name Social world and source of visibility Hollywood or cultural connection
Babe Paley New York society; Vogue fashion editor from 1938 and known for her style Connection to celebrity culture through fashion and media, rather than a Los Angeles base
Slim Keith New York society and Capote’s circle California native; Hollywood relationships included marriages to director Howard Hawks and producer Leland Hayward
C.Z. Guest New York society; equestrian and gardener Painted by prominent artists; Capote wrote the introduction to her 1976 book First Garden

Babe Paley: fashion and public image

Paley worked as a Vogue fashion editor beginning in 1938, before marrying CBS executive William S. Paley in 1947. Her style became central to her reputation in New York society. That makes her relevant to the broader history of celebrity and media, but it does not make her a Los Angeles socialite.

Slim Keith: a California native in a New York circle

Keith’s biography bridges Hollywood and New York society. TIME identifies her as a California native and notes her marriages to director Howard Hawks and producer Leland Hayward. Her place among Capote’s Swans, however, refers to a New York social set. Keeping those facts separate avoids turning a Hollywood connection into a claim about where her society life was centered.

C.Z. Guest: gardening, art, and society

Guest was known as an equestrian and gardener, and prominent artists painted her. TIME reports that she continued to appear socially with Capote after the publication of “La Côte Basque 1965.” Capote’s introduction to her 1976 book First Garden also points to an identity tied to gardening and publishing, not only society appearances.

What dramatizations can—and cannot—establish

Feud: Capote vs. The Swans dramatizes real people and events, but TIME notes that the series takes liberties and identifies claims for which there is no evidence. A storyline in a dramatization is not proof of a private event. For biographical claims, distinguish what is documented from what a television adaptation portrays.

Earlier society figures are a different category

Caroline Schermerhorn Astor and Mamie Fish help explain the older New York society tradition, not Hollywood’s social scene. TIME describes Astor as a Gilded Age society leader associated with “old money” and reports that Ward McAllister popularized the term “the 400.” Fish was known for elaborate themed parties; Vogue also recalls her wit and parties. They are useful historical comparisons for how status and social coverage were cultivated, but they should not be counted as Hollywood socialites.

Why there is no definitive fame ranking

Fame can mean press attention, entertainment-industry connections, cultural work, or lasting influence, and those measures do not produce a single fair score across people from different eras and cities. One publisher sample describes an informal 2006 ranking of Manhattan socialites that placed Tinsley Mortimer first, using criteria such as style, press coverage, and event appearances alongside a subjective “hot factor.” That dated New York list does not measure Hollywood fame.

A transparent account should therefore identify the geography and basis for each person’s prominence. On that basis, Babitz is a strong Los Angeles example, while Paley, Keith, and Guest are best understood as New York society figures whose stories intersect with Hollywood, fashion, or the arts.
