Raul Malo disclosed in 2024 that he was being treated for colon cancer. He continued performing during part of his illness, but in September 2025 he said he was battling leptomeningeal disease, and The Mavericks canceled tour dates. Malo died in December 2025, aged 60. The original “soldier on” framing is therefore retrospective, not a description of the band’s present circumstances.
What cancer did Raul Malo have?
Malo made his diagnosis public in June 2024. In a July 7 interview with NPR, he said his doctors were calling it colon cancer. He described a personal path to the diagnosis: a physical led his doctor to recommend a gastrointestinal specialist, who recommended a colonoscopy; a scan followed, and doctors found spots. “It’s basically – colon cancer is what they’re officially calling it,” he told NPR host Ayesha Rascoe. NPR’s interview and transcript document his account.

Malo also used the interview to urge listeners to get checked, saying, “And the main thing is we want to get the message out there to have people get themselves checked.” That was his appeal based on his own experience, not a substitute for individual medical advice or a complete guide to screening.
Did Raul Malo keep touring after his diagnosis?
Yes, for a time. In an April 4, 2025, Here & Now segment, WBUR reported that Malo had a stage-four cancer diagnosis and that it had not stopped him from touring at that point. That dated account establishes that he continued performing during part of his illness; it does not mean he toured without interruption afterward. WBUR’s April 2025 report covered that period.

What changed for The Mavericks in 2025?
In September 2025, Malo said he was battling leptomeningeal disease (LMD), a complication in which cancer spreads to the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. The Associated Press reported that the diagnosis led The Mavericks to cancel dates with Dwight Yoakam during their joint tour and that Malo left Nashville for treatment in Houston. The later cancellations mark a clear change from the touring reported earlier that year. The Associated Press reported the September diagnosis and subsequent events.
What happened to Raul Malo?
Malo was hospitalized in December 2025 with severe complications from chemotherapy for LMD, according to a December 7 announcement by the National Music Council and Songwriters Guild of America. He attended the Ryman Auditorium tribute to him online. NPR/NHPR later reported that he had been hospitalized the week before the tribute concerts, missed them in person, and watched a livestream from his hospital room.

The Associated Press reported that Malo died in December 2025 at age 60. His wife, Betty Malo, said in a family statement quoted by AP: “No one embodied life and love, joy and passion, family, friends, music, and adventure the way our beloved Raul did.” The AP report on Malo’s death provides the family statement and chronology.
How did musicians honor him?
More than 30 artists took part in the December 2025 Ryman tribute concerts, NPR/NHPR reported; some proceeds went to Stand Up To Cancer. The Mavericks described Malo as “a force of human nature, with an infectious energy” in a statement reported by NPR/NHPR. The Songwriters Guild and National Music Council also described the tribute and his online attendance while hospitalized. These were tribute events; they should not be confused with a medical fundraiser beyond the proceeds NPR/NHPR specifically reported. NPR/NHPR’s account of the tribute and his death and the Songwriters Guild/National Music Council announcement describe the events.

The Mavericks’ music and Malo’s final album-era interview
The Mavericks were known for moving among country, rock, blues and Latin sounds. Malo co-founded the band in 1989 with drummer Paul Deakin and bassist Robert Reynolds, according to AP. His Cuban-American musical upbringing was part of the group’s broader musical story, as NPR/NHPR also noted.
NPR interviewed Malo in 2024 about Moon & Stars, which AP described as The Mavericks’ 13th studio album. The conversation placed the record alongside his diagnosis in the public story of that year. Speaking about the song “The Years Will Not Be Kind,” Malo said, “It paints a very stark, realistic picture.” The album offers listening context for that period, but says nothing by itself about his treatment or prognosis.
