Only Murders in the Building begins with three residents investigating a death in their Upper West Side apartment building—and turning that investigation into a true-crime podcast. Its season-one making is best understood through the creators’ account of the premise and two official Hulu featurettes: one about the series’ creative approach, the other about the Arconia’s set and costume design. “Pure murder” is a playful description of the show’s murder-mystery premise, not a claim about a real incident or production crisis.
The premise puts three unlikely investigators together
Hulu describes the series as a story about three residents of an Upper West Side apartment building who investigate a death and make a true-crime podcast. The combination gives the show its central contrast: the characters are neighbors drawn into a mystery, but they also approach it through the habits and language of true-crime storytelling. Hulu’s series page sets out that premise.
The idea had a long gestation. In a May 2022 Emmy Magazine feature, the Television Academy reported that the seed of the series had been in Steve Martin’s mind for decades. That describes the idea’s long history; it is not a detailed account of when the project was developed or how season one was produced.
Why Mabel changes the trio’s dynamic
The central trio is not simply three versions of the same amateur sleuth. Co-creator John Hoffman explained that Mabel brings an honesty that challenges the older men’s self-absorption: “We needed someone who could be straight-up honest about what she’s going through and make these two more self-obsessed men stop in their tracks and wake up to a feeling of responsibility,” he told the Television Academy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That rationale helps explain the story’s balance: the investigation is shared, but the characters’ different perspectives—and the responsibility they owe one another—matter alongside the mystery.
Hulu’s featurettes offer two different views of the making
Hulu published a general behind-the-scenes featurette on September 13, 2021. Its description says it interviews executive producers Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman alongside Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. It is the broader of the two official videos, bringing together the producers and principal cast to discuss the series. Watch Hulu’s behind-the-scenes featurette.

On October 26, 2021, Hulu published a separate featurette, “Art of The Arconia,” focused specifically on set and costume design. Its description names executive producers Jess Rosenthal, John Hoffman, and Dan Fogelman, as well as Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, among those interviewed. Watch Hulu’s “Art of The Arconia” featurette.
Together, the videos point to two useful ways of looking at the season: the first through the people discussing the series as a whole, and the second through its designed visual world. The “Art of The Arconia” description establishes that set and costume design are its subjects; it does not document specific construction methods, budgets, or sourcing decisions.

What the available accounts do—and don’t—establish
The official featurette descriptions and the Television Academy’s article provide a grounded account of the show’s premise, the long-standing idea behind it, Mabel’s role in the trio, and the visual-design subjects explored in Hulu’s featurette. They do not establish exact season-one filming dates, a complete location list, or specific techniques used to build or dress the sets.
A later Directors Guild of America event account describes a discussion involving John Hoffman, directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, unit production manager Kristin Bernstein, and location manager Brendan O’Rourke. The material available from that account concerns the series generally, rather than resolving season-one dates or locations. Read the Directors Guild of America event account.
