Jamie Dornan will play Strider, also known as Aragorn, in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Warner Bros. announced the casting at CinemaCon, confirming that Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn in the earlier film trilogy, is not returning in the role. The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
Who is playing Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum?
Dornan has been announced as Strider, the name Aragorn uses during the period covered by the film. Warner Bros. revealed the cast at CinemaCon, as reported by TheWrap on April 14, 2026 and The Independent on April 15, 2026.
Mortensen portrayed Aragorn in the earlier trilogy. Dornan is taking over the role for this film; the announcement does not indicate that Mortensen will appear as Aragorn in it.
How the recast was announced
The casting developed in two public steps. On April 3, 2026, director Andy Serkis confirmed that the production was recasting Aragorn, but did not name a replacement. In a report relaying his interview with ScreenRant, TheWrap quoted Serkis: “I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone.”

Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon cast reveal followed on April 14, naming Dornan as Strider. So while the earlier recasting was initially reported without a successor, Dornan’s casting is no longer merely speculation.
