The live-action Gundam film is still moving forward: Netflix reported on April 20, 2026, that production had begun in Queensland, Australia. Netflix says Jim Mickle is directing, Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo are among the cast, and the film will be released by Netflix. That update is later than the original 2025 plan for a worldwide theatrical release, so the two announcements should not be treated as concurrent plans.
Has the live-action Gundam movie been delayed?
The available official updates do not establish that the film was delayed or sent back to development. On February 5, 2025, Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary announced a co-financing agreement and said they planned a worldwide theatrical release. On April 20, 2026, Netflix reported that production had begun and said Netflix would release the film. The later Netflix statement is the latest sourced status; it does not explain the change from the earlier theatrical plan.
Netflix’s report says production had officially begun in Queensland, Australia. It does not confirm that filming has been completed. Neither announcement gives a release date, budget, or final film title.
What is the live-action Gundam movie about?
Netflix describes an original story about rival mech pilots fighting on opposing sides of a decades-long war between Earth and its space colonies. The announcement does not identify the film as an adaptation of a particular existing Gundam series or story arc, nor does it provide character names.
