Their practically minded companion sees the danger, climbs a tree, and survives. The story’s lesson is not that learning is worthless, but that knowledge without sound judgment can be deadly.
What happens in “The Lion-Makers”?
In Arthur W. Ryder’s 1925 translation of the Panchatantra, four Brahmans set out hoping to travel, win royal favor, and acquire money. Three are accomplished scholars; the fourth has practical sense but little formal learning. The learned companions discuss keeping any earnings to themselves, but one argues that the fourth should remain with them.
While traveling through a forest, the group finds a dead lion. The scholars demonstrate their separate skills: one reconstructs its skeleton, another restores its skin, flesh, and blood, and the third prepares to give it life. Their companion warns that the revived lion will kill them. When they ignore him, he climbs a tree. The lion comes to life and kills the three scholars. The fourth man waits until it leaves, then climbs down and returns home.
Why does the practical companion survive?
He recognizes that the scholars’ success in restoring the lion does not make the act safe. Instead of trying to outdo their technical work, he assesses the likely consequence and takes the one available precaution: getting out of the lion’s reach. His survival comes from applying foresight to the situation, not from possessing more knowledge about the lion.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ryder’s version states the moral in verse:
“Scholarship is less than sense; Therefore seek intelligence: Senseless scholars in their pride Made a lion; then they died.”
This is the tale’s own pointed warning about pride and poor judgment. It should not be read as proof that formal learning has no value: the danger arises because the scholars use their abilities without weighing the risk.

Which version of the tale is this?
“The Lion-Makers” belongs to the Panchatantra tradition, but the title and placement vary among versions. The account above follows Ryder’s translation, identified as a 1925 translation of The Panchatantra. A separate transcription places the tale in Book 5 of the Purnabhadra recension, identified there as dating to 1199 CE. A U.S. Government Publishing Office-hosted document also reproduces a version credited to The Fables of Panchatantra in Lin Yutang’s 1942 collection The Wisdom of China and India.
These sources establish the tale’s Panchatantra context, not a separate edition definitively titled The Lion Makers: A Tale of Wisdom. Retellings can differ in wording, placement, character details, and the closing moral; identify the translation or version when discussing a particular text.

Using the story for reading or classroom discussion
A school learning module uses the tale for listening and comprehension. Readers can begin with straightforward questions about who appears in the story, where it happens, and how the plot unfolds, then consider what the companion understands that the scholars overlook.
- What abilities do the three scholars contribute, and what important question do they fail to ask?
- What does the fourth companion predict, and how does he act on that prediction?
- Does the ending criticize learning itself, or the use of learning without judgment?
- What alternative choice might have allowed the scholars to avoid the danger?
For a source text, read Ryder’s translation of “The Lion-Makers”. The Purnabhadra recension transcription offers a distinct version, and the government-hosted document reproduces the Lin Yutang-credited version. A school module also assigns the tale for listening and comprehension: Primary 3 English school-based assessment module.
