A video reported as leaked from the New Zealand set of The Legend of Zelda appears to show the film’s leads in character, but Nintendo has not authenticated the clip. The company’s first official look at Link and Zelda was a set of still photographs released on November 17, 2025—not footage. The film is now titled The Legend of Zelda and is planned for worldwide theatrical release on April 30, 2027.
What the reported set leak shows—and what it does not prove
Coverage of the New Zealand production reported that video from the set had leaked before Nintendo published its first official images of the actors in costume. That makes “first live-action footage” a description of the reported leak, not an officially verified milestone. Neither Nintendo’s announcement nor the official materials cited here authenticate the video as genuine.

Later discussion has also included fan guesses about who might appear in the footage. GamesRadar+ framed those identifications as what fans think they see, rather than confirmed appearances. A face or character guessed from a brief, unofficial clip should not be treated as confirmation of casting or plot details.
The official first look was still photographs
On November 17, 2025, Nintendo released the first official images of Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth in costume as Zelda and Link. GameSpot reported on those photographs after the set-video leak. The images are official stills; they are separate from the circulating video and do not authenticate it. GameSpot’s report on the official set photos describes them as pictures, not footage.

Nintendo’s title and release announcement says Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the film theatrically worldwide on April 30, 2027.

The New Zealand Film Commission also lists the production as filmed in New Zealand and identifies Ainsworth as Link and Bragason as Princess Zelda. Its listing corroborates the production location and lead roles, but does not verify the leaked video. New Zealand Film Commission’s film listing.
Production and financing
Nintendo and Arad Productions are producing the film, with Wes Ball directing. Nintendo’s 2023 announcement said Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment would co-finance it, with Nintendo providing more than 50% of the financing. That is a statement about the financing arrangement, not a measure of the film’s budget. Nintendo’s November 2023 production announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the film adapting a particular Zelda game?
Nintendo has described the movie as based on The Legend of Zelda game series; the announced information does not identify one specific game as its source. A game such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is part of the broader franchise, but there is no confirmation here that the film adapts it or that it is a movie tie-in.
